Files incompatible?

Ok... I've hooked my Alesis HD24 up to my firewire and transfered files into the computer. They are there and easy to find. They are playable on my jukebox program. When I try to import them into my Sonar XL2.2, I get the message "File not compatible with current project". I've tried to import wav files and Aif files and I get the same message... what is going on here?

Are you sure those files have sampling rate and bith depth match to SONAR's audio setting ?

Options --> Audio --> General ?

Ok... The HD files are recorded at 48. and are 24 bit. When I click on the properties in windows it says PCM. I tried to change the settings in Audio and it automatically resets it to 44 and 16 bit "becasue my driver says to". This is SB LIVE.

I tried updating my sb live 5.1 drivers to see if that would help but it didn't change anything. jeez..

So basically what you folks are saying is that I need a 24 bit soundcard? The SBLive 5.1 is 16 bit/44.1. The HD24 sampling rate is selectable but bit depth is 24 and is not selectable. If I have to get a different sound card, I can do that. I just want to make sure that I'm not messing something up:)

You can also open them in an audio editor and change the sampling rate.

I'm surprised that the MDM won't let you select other sampling rates to export tracks at...

correct me if I'm wrong, but...

If you start a new Sonar project, and first set the File Bit Depth to 24 bit, wouldn't you be able to import the files then? I know you can set the bit depth to 24 with a SBLive. My guess is that you try to import the files into an existing project, which is already 16 bit, and therefor can't import 24 bit ones.

I'm a little curious: Why do you set the bitdepth to 24 bit with an SB Live?

well, I don't, but SteveE9C6 says the Alesis can't be set to 16 bit, so...

I can set new projects at 48/24 but driver bit depth won't change from 16 without automatically resetting everything to 44/16. I click create a new project, use a audio only template, and go to import audio. The audio files are in "my documents" and are labeled song one and song two. For some reason they have a music jukebox icon but under properties they are a pcm/wav file at 48/24. They playback just fine in the jukebox window. I just get the same message each time I attempt to import them into a new project. Audio File incompatible with current project.

I've spent this morning looking at soundcards. The MIA by Echo looks like it would work.... Very frustrating! I do appreciate the responses and suggestions guys...

Hmm...it doesnt' look like the MIA will work as it does not do midi.
The M-Audio 2496 looks like it could handle the job.

Ya think?

Remember... I really don't plan on using the SonarXL for recording but rather for adding drum tracks and editing. I also will do some midi keys.... So I don't need the mic pres and inputs of the higher priced units.

Eureka!

uhhmm... remember my first post here "computer idiot 101"?

I now offer proof that I live up to that billing:) Ok... when I went back into my Alesis FST program, I noticed that is has an options file. While the HD24 records at 24 bit, the Fireport can be set to export at 16 bits. It works just fine when I change this...except that I loose the benefit of working with 24 bit files.
I still think I'll get a 24/96 sound card just for that reason, but at least I'm up and running! Ok.... back to the Drumatic loops:)

But if the drum stuff you are adding is from 16-bit sources anyway (almost all loops and sample sets are 16-bit) it won't matter at all.
