Hi All,

I was reading the latest "recording" magazine last night and there was an article by scott dorsey on recording acoustic guitar and voice at the same time. he states that figure 8 mics are the best due to the off-axis response being very low (null point).

What are some suggestions for these types of mics? brands and such?

I'd like to get two and try this for recording some songs i have written. I get tired of tracking sometimes..:D

for condensers, I only have an AT 3035 (my band mate's) and a MXL V67m (thanks to this board last spring..man that thing is killer for vocals)...and my knowledge of mics is very limited, so any help is appreciated.

I tried to re-read through the "big" thread but my eyes glazed over and my head started to hurt so i gave it a rest lol...it's cool that it's still around..i've taken a break from reading about recording (to get my band going) and it's nice to see it still growing....:)

thanks.

Studio Projects model B3 is switchable between omni, cardioid, and fig.8. All for about $150.

cool thanks...i read thru the "big" thread again finally, and i also saw reccomendations for the Studio Projects C3 and the Nady SCM1000..how do these compare in fig 8 with the B3? i want sometings specific for fig 8.

thanks again.

Sorry, the B3 is the only fig. 8 mic I've used. I can't make a comparison for you. If you do search in this forum, you'll find a few comments on the B3 and the C3. I've never read a negative comment on either mic. I do remember a post by Harvey comparing the two. One of them(I don't remember which) was designed to sound more like a German mic. You should probably search for that post rather than rely on my feable memory!

You might also want to check out the Audio Technica 4050. Sometimes a hypercardioid can work as well in a situation where tight nulls are important.

i'll do that..since i specifically want to get 2 mics to record acoustic and vocals at the same time, i'm looking more for the tight null you speak of i guess...sorry for my ignorance, i'm more of a musician than a recording engineer..so far i have based my mic purchases on suggestions i read about here...
the 4050 is sweet i'm sure, but i can't afford $2k for 2 mics...($999.00 each at zZounds..)

oh, and i love this:

The search term you specified (c3) is under the minimum word length (3) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.
If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

haha..:D gotta use ole *'s i guess..

thanks all..

You might be looking at the 4060 (which is a cardioid-only tube mic). The 4050 shouldn't cost any more than $499 new (obviously less than that used). There don't seem to be a lot of low-cost figure-8 mic's around. You're options open up significantly if you get into the higher price ranges, but for $500 and under, it's a small market.

your right..shit..i saw the list price..nevermind..haha..

that's still a bit high for 2 mics for me at this stage..maybe i can try 2 b3's...

twist, have you recorded anything in the fashion i'm describing? ie guitar and voice at the same time?

thanks.

Sorry, I have not. I bought it because I want to experiment with M/S recording on my acoustic, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hey CDT, I rather like the CAD M179 for a good, inexpensive multipattern mic. They pop up on ebay from time to time rather cheap.

It's actually not a dumbass question at all.

If you are a dumbass, then you might have difficulty understanding it, though. :D I struggled through it all and eventually got the gist, but it takes some trial and more than a lot of error. Here's some good stuff on it that Pipeline posted a while back:

Oh yeah, also , at "MICGUYS.COM" I found the reference to the "German" sounding mic. It's the C3. So what's that make the B3? I guess it depends on who's singing into it!

ok...

i took two "dumbass retartant" pills before clicking the links..

they were duds! placebos!!!

but!!

i really don't need that haircut anymore!! canceled my appt. just now!!

my hair is nice and flat on top from the M/S info flying over my head so fast..lol...

ok...time to go drink an after work beer...it's about 5pm...

So what's that make the B3? I guess it depends on who's singing into it!

if i get it, it will be a "pig latin" mic...:D

ok..now i really know it's beer time...:p

thanks.

If you can find a Soundelux U97, it has 4 patterns (Cardiod, Hypercardiod, Fig-8, Omni) I got mine just as it was being discountinued. Cost me ~$600. I got good results with the U97 in Fig-8 on the guitar and a SM58 on vocals. I was going through a Great River MP2 which helped the SM58 alot. Good luck!

fig 8 pattern

Try the CAD E-200 it has a very good fig 8 pattern and is at a very good price.
