Here's a mix I'd like some feedback on. Mostly interested in what's too loud, or not loud enough at this point. Lend your ears?

Amazingly beautiful!
It all sounds balanced to me and it's nice and wide. The acoustics are nicely recorded and all the voices are simply awesome. Thanx for sharing this, GZ!

The mix as a whole could come up. The vocals could come up. Electric guitar panned left is a little loud. Bass could come up. Backup vocal should definately come up, but only in certain parts. Acoustic guitar could come down a hair.

Nice tune.

Thanks Joey for giving a listen

OK, this is great feedback and I really appreciate it. I went back and listened carefully, and I think you are correct on several points. So I made a new mix and did the following.
1)lowered acoustic guitar
2)brought up bass
3)brought up backing vocals, and you were correct, only in some spots
4)lowered one channel of el.guit. although I think maybe you had your headphones on backwards or something. To me it was the one panned R that was too loud, so I lowered it.
5)raised the entire mix level
6)This is the only one I didn't agree with. I left the main vocal levels the same. They sound fine to me the way they are.
So here's the new mix:

I downloaded first version yesterday night and listened only in phones;
downloaded the mod version today and listened both on monitors

If could could change:
*Vocals are loud in the second version; first it´s better (IMO)
*Cutting a bit of Bass drum sub lows (a little boomy "and/or" loud in the mix) probably will helps in the balance of Bass guitar/drums.Not a "must", more a matter of taste.

Overall, Excellent! Congrats for the performance and recording (and great composition and beautifull voice).Good job on mix too.

Ciro

I get a click when the panning moves in the pre intro.
Vox too loud - intimate but a little too!
The bass drum feels like it's tapping my forehead - could use a cut.
Bass guitar - a matter of tase but I'd add a tiny peak at 3khz.
the voice & melody remind me of Rick Springfield in the very early 70's (the LPs - Beginnings or Comic Book Heroes era) but that's a good thing CBH is a superb LP.
Nice capture & mix mate.

Thanks, i'll try cutting some lows from the kick. That's a good idea.

Thanks Ray. As above, cutting the kick lows should help your forehead feel better. I'll try the 3k peak as well. Never done that, but coming from you, It seems like it's worth a try. The clicks in the beginning were done on purpose by the artist as sort of an effect. Not sure I like it. Will talk to him about re-doing that part.

I listened to the 2nd mix and I think it's very good. About the only thing you should look at is the kick drum. Sounds too fake. Everything else is really good.

Nice song.

Chili,

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes I get so focused on the vocals and guitars, the kick drum is just an afterthought. It's nice to get feedback from fresh ears who focus on different things. The drums on this are midi. I'll try to find a better kick patch, or see if I can EQ/comp it to sound better.

I thought they might have been a midi patch. If you're looking for unsolicited recommendations, I can't say enough about ezdrummer. None the less, it was a great song all around.

Can EZDrummer be triggered by midi, or are they just aif files that you paste to the track?

Yeah, it uses midi files. It's a VSTi. I believe it's like an expanded general midi map, slightly different because it has cymbal chokes and stuff. It comes with hundreds of grooves files that you can drag and drop into your DAW, then edit as you see fit... or just leave them as is.

Chili,

Thanks. I've been using Drums on Demand, but I couldn't fine one that fit this song, otherwise I prefer that. I'll check into EZDrummer.

Hard to find any nits on this...mix sounds very full and clean...thought maybe the acoustic might be a bit brittle sounding in the intro, but once the vocals kicked in, it fit nicely...Great song !
