Help me. I'm really seing a need to have a solid field recording system but I'm torn between all the recording formats available. Got any ideas to help?

Portable DAT recorders are generally used for field recording. They are nice but can get pretty expensive depending on your budget. What kind of field recording are you planning on doing? Here are a couple to look at.

I've used the Tascam before, but don't know much about the Sony. Then you'll need to get a microphone, preferably a hand held boom mic stand if you plan on walking around or need to capture certain things that are far away. Heaphone to listen to what you're recording and probably a windscreen for the microphone if you'll be outside.
