hello
Well, I just ordered a SHARP MD-MS722 (see it here: http://www.minidisco.com/minispecs/sharp722.html)
recorder from minidisco.com, they were having a sale. I'm hoping to use it for making recordings of live shows (with permission, of course. Has anyone else tried this? I also want to record sounds from the environment such as construction zones, heavy traffic, what have you.

There was an article in homerecording magazine about using pocket sized recorders for such tasks, and I found some useful info about mics and such. http://www.soundprofessionals.com hasa cool little stereo T mic which might come in handy. But I'm anxious to see how a live recording will turn out.

Anyone have any good ideas of where to hide the recorder to avoid it being found when I get frisked at the front door of a show? Not that I would use such information, because I HAVE PERMISSION TO RECORD THE SHOW. I figure if the mic is small enough I could put it in my shoe, and maybe pose the recorder as my wallet.

Another interesting thing I found out is a little fact about ATRAC. I guess it doesnt simple "throw out" the 80% of data taken from the original sound, but compresses it down - a lot-. So 20% of the sound is original, uncompressed data, while its the less or non audible sounds are compessed. I didnt know that, I assumed all that data was just thrown out.

Anyway, this isnt an essay, so I'll shut up.

Hey Nilbog,
We actually had some guy record The Lambs last month with a small MD recorder. He had these crazy stereo mic's that were worn on his head like a visor. The sound ended up being pretty good, for the 15th Street Tavern that is! I can't remember what the mic's were called though.
As for hiding it just stick it down the front of your pants man, they never search you there. But if you have permission you should not have to sneak it in. How about hooking the recorder up to the mixing board direct also?
I also like to record ambient sounds like traffic, water running and loop them in the sampler. If you change the bpm on it and adjust the tone they usually come out really wierd and cool.
My .02 Canadian currency, hehehehe

werd. I should look into those micorphone visor things. We're they all secret and hidden or did it look big and stupid?
Security guy at door: "What the hell is on your face?"
me: "oh, nothing, just this visor with things sticking out of it."
Security: "Okay, go on in"

Not that security is a problem, because I have permission to record the shows. ;)

hey, I heard you guys were playing a show again at the 15th street tavern. And of all places, on the radio (1190). Another 21+ show...damn

They're called "binaural mics," and depending on how you use them they can be quite good. To get the full effect you really need to listen to the finished product on headphones. Usually I prefer either MS micing (with one of those nice Paia Project R mics) or with a coincident pair of ribbon mics (when I'm in a _real_ studio...) But the binaural "visor" things are nice and portable. Do a search on the net for binaural microphones or check out http://www.minidisc.org for a bunch of links to sites like that. Usually it's a pair of the Panasonic electret condenser elements on a frame. Add a battery and you're set. Hell, if your MD recorder provides "t-power" you don't even need a battery.

They were definatly ugly and funny looking. Just tell them you are a mad sciencetist conducting an experiment on B.O. in public areas! Muhaahaaahaaa. Yeah that will work.
We have been playing alot lately but all the shows are 21 and over, D'oh! We are working on a couple of all ages ones right now but probably won't happen until Oct. New album should be ready in a Month also. I will be posting a song from it on my Riffage page within a week or so. I will let you know though. I also just finished a wedding song for a friend that I recorded with the 4 trackie and the puter. Once I get that up some critique will be appreciated :-)
