I've sold my Samson C02 Pencil Mic Pair and am getting an MXL 990/991 pair, and I keep seeing FET preamp on alot of mics.

My samson mics don't specify, so what is an FET premap and do all condenser mics have them?

Thanks! This forum has been a great help in understanding things!

All regular* condenser mics have either a FET (field effect transistor) or a tube. Without getting too technical, a condenser mic capsule requires an amplifier within a couple of inches of the capsule to avoid loss of signal, which has to be one of those two types.

* There is a class of condensers called RF condensers that work differently, but they are rare and expensive--Sennheiser MKH series are one example, maybe the only one on the market . . .
