My son is looking at a Fender Telecaster Nashville Deluxe. I guess it's kinda new from Fender. Two Tele pickups with a Strat pickup in the middle. He's definitely into country and likes the Tele sound. It's $419 at Musicians Friend. Anyone have any experience with this axe? I'm thinking he should stick with a standard Tele but he likes the look and what it "probably" sounds like and it's only $100 more. Would have to order on-line since no one carries it here. Any comments appreciated.

If you want a really sweet sounding Tele with real nice playability, check out the remake of the '72 Tele Thinline with the dual humbuckers.
It's a steal for around $600.00
The range of sound from the Thinline is incredible. The kid will never need another electric guitar ever again.

Thanks Buck62,
He was also looking at the '72 Thinline and '72 Custom. I'm afraid the price (about $629 at MusFriend) might keep him away from the Thinline.

There's an old saying that goes....
"Spend your money once..."

Most young guitar players have a habit of buying cheaper guitars at first, and then end up spending more money to buy a better guitar later.
The trade-in value is almost nothing on a cheaper model.
In short, it's best to spend a little more right now on a guitar he'll cherish for a lifetime, rather than buy a guitar that doesn't have a great, all-around sound and feel. The Thinline is worth every penny.
The Nashville Deluxe is a pretty good guitar, though... but if he's like most of us, he'll be kicking himself later for not getting the better model.
The most important thing is to keep him interested in playing. It's a proven fact that musicians do better than most other students in school. That, in itself, is the best benefit of all.

Buck62-

Thanks for the info on the '72 Thinline. I have yet to add a Fender to my collection and this looks like a great buy. Also a great intro to Fender.

I tested out a bunch of Tele's at Guitar Center before, I know a lot of people use them (Frank Black, one of my top favorites, uses em), so I wanted to test em out. I played a ton, and did not like them...until I picked up the Nashville Tele. If I ever got a Telecaster, I would definately get this guitar. Sweet guitar, love the range of tone. Definately a great guitar.

In regards to ordering from MF, here's something that you may want to check out. Last week I was at Guitar Center with a friend who was looking at some pro audio gear that he'd seen in the MF catalog. GC told us that basically GC owns MF or that they're sister companies (sorry, I was noodling on a guitar at the time) and that they honor the prices in the MF catalog...I don't know if it was simply a situation of honoring the sale prices from a competitor in order to get the business, but hey, we were able to walk out with a new mixer and ended up paying less in taxes than we would've in shipping charges.
Anyone else heard of this Guitar Center - Musician's Friend relationship?

Yes guitar center owns musicians friend or the other way around. Not sure which. But the bottom line is that the prices are honored at either place. If you call MF and tell them about the guitar centers special of the day that is gone by the time you get there.. they will hook you up. So says the dude on the phone at MF.

Hey Don...

One other guitar you might want to check out is the Godin Radiator. It's a real nice playing/sounding guitar that's in the $400.00 range. It's also a very unique, cool looking axe.

I've bought several pieces of gear from MF and have always gotten great service. I still give the local store the opportunity to sell me an item first just to support them. For instance, my local store will sell me the Nashville Tele for $10 more than the MF price. Shipping vs local sales tax would just about cancel each other. I'll buy it local if that's the one he decides on. Right now, he's gone to look at a 1968 MGB (that's a car). If it's in good shape he hopes to clean it up, check it out (play with it some) and re-sell it at a profit to buy guitar gear. Smart kid.

I play country and the Nashville has the twang........I Just about bought one but I bought the '52 reissue tele' instead......Price was alot higher but for country that guitar is the s@#$.

Yo Buck62, I had the thinline several yrs ago and it was a very very sweet ax, also had three diffrent fender tele deluxes with the two humbuckers and strat headstock have you seen any of these around anywhere? man o man still kicking myslef in the ass!

I haven't seen any Tele Deluxe's, but you can still get another Thinline for only $629... it's as close to the original as you can get.
