What does the master tone control on a J-bass actually do? I can hear its effect acoustically, but I'm curious what's going on electrically. Is it a simple fader between the mid and bridge pickups? Or is it altering the tone of the mixed signal?

IIRC, it's just a simple capacitor across the final output, rolling off the top end of the signal.

Yes, it's a treble cut. I've just been experimenting leaving it wide open with the bridge p/u alone - unbelieveable how much high frequency a bass can produce :)

The tone control is a path to ground interupted by a capacitor. The cap keeps all but the high frequencies from passing to ground, so it is basically a low pass filter.
