Hey all, hope you're having a nice weekend :)

This is a new recording I've been working on, and I'd appreciate any comments on the mix before I put it up on my reverbnation page. Any comments on the tune, the performance or the mix appreciated :)

FWIW, there is basically no mastering, just a limiter on the stereo output. Any mastering tips appreciated.
I've been trying to make my tunes a little heavier than what I've done before and I think it's getting there. Still rock rather than metal, but getting there :D

Thanks for listening,
cheers,
graham

Hullo.

Sounds pretty heavy. To me the guitar is a little over-powering in the mix and quite harsh; it kind of leaps out of the mix! Vocals sit quite nicely, so I'd try to bring the drums and bass up a bit. Start of song is really good, but when the 'squealy' guitar comes in you can't hear the drums.

Playing and singing is great. Great song. Nice one!

Just my opinion though, and I find mixing difficult...

PS - like the vocoder bit

Thanks AW!
I'd wanted to make the guitars dominant, maybe I've gone a little too far, I'll mess around with it. I had also brought the drums down overall, I'll try bringing them up a little and that might tone down the guitars a bit.
The vocoder is a autoya effect, pretty over the top but I think it's cool too :D
cheers, g

Ok, try this out. I brought the drums up a little, and had a go at some mastering effects - a mild compressor (ratio 1.6) and some minor eq. I changed the intro a little so it fades in sooner too.
It sounds better... I think... View attachment Freakin Out 5.4c M DW.mp3

Just listened to the new mix - much better, I think it rocks more!:D

I think the performance is pretty good although the vocals seemed a bit pitchy to me in the beginning. The line, "...you know I've thought about it" in particular. I thought the autoya was cool the way you used it here. The 2nd mix is better than the first. The whole things still seems a bit two dimensional to me though...like not enough depth. I don't know if it's the reverbs you used or the amount of lack of reverb, or just me, but I think in general, it is just a bit flat and thin sounding.

Thank you for listening :)
You're right, there is a little off pitch bit there, I hadn't noticed it before. I can live with it, but I really need to practice my singing more.
I'd agree it is a little flat, I think that's my lack of mastering knowledge more than anything else. I'm looking at getting things mastered by someone else from now on so I can concentrate on the recording and mixing.
