Feedback on rhythm track for upcoming CD

Hey gang...

Haven't been here listing in a few days; been doing a lot of recording. My praise band at church, is prepping to do our 2nd CD, and I've been working up the rhythm section parts. I've got three almost in the can so far; I'd like to hear your thoughts on this track's progress, it's That's Why We Praise Him, by Tommy Walker. (Well, it's a karaoke track, actually, it still needs extra percussion, vox, and the horn section).

Anyway, I'm interested in your feedback on the relationship between the bass & drums, the relationship between the two keyboard parts, and the relationship between the two guitar parts, as well as the overall balance and placement choices.

It seems like a tight track.

The only thing that's not really hitting me is actually the main keys patch, I like the secondary rhodes/whirly patch, but that older roland 80's tine sound isn't really doing it for me, I feel like an acoustic piano, or a grittier rhodes sound would bring that part out more. It seems like so much the base of what you're doing. Possibly kicking up a little overdrive on that chorus. The drums at the end could use a touch less reverb on the toms, but that's just a personal taste thing, and I think they work. The bass is well done as well.

Overall solid track. Just some polish work to do.
 
Thank you! Only, the primary keys patch is a piano, specifically from a Roland RD-500. It is through the 500's light chorus, admittedly, but do you think the primary guitar track is messing with the tone of the piano; is it too cluttered?
 
Interesting, I just traded my rd-200, not sure if the 500 is in the same series but I think it is... the thing is, it's not really piano sounding... it's unique, and I always thought it was musically inspiring... there was the first ep on that keyboard with the "brilliance" turned all the way down and the chorus on that was just fabulous, descent clav sound too, nice and sticky... But it feels like this song wants a legitimately acoustic sound.

I don't think the guitars are clashing at all, and actually maybe a little more of a powerful guitar on the choruses, pushing past the keys and letting it sit back on the mix there would go a long way?

just some thoughts.
 
The last version I tried the other night had a 12-string instead of a chorused Strat as the primary (and only) guitar; it was too pushy; like I was trying to be Kenny Loggins or something... :)

I may try drying out that piano, see if it works better with pure tone...
 
Nice mix. Maybe bring up the left guitar a bit. No, bring up both guitars a lot (just kidding). Can never have too much guitar. Some people say that about cowbell but they've got it wrong. Back to the tune.... At 2:21 where the synth piano is featured on the harplike arpeggios, it sounds a little too compressed to me. It'd be nice to hear brighter transients in it there. Sounds like a good backing to sing to.

Those may/will probably go away, truth be told; they are the vocal part; they are in there as a marker for the singers... The band is top shelf, but fact is, it's a volunteer, non-auditioned group, so some of the singers are, shall we say, less experienced... :)

I tried it with more left guitar, but the thing kept trying to veer into oncoming traffic, ya know? :)

For me, the one thing you can't have enough of in a mix is bagpipes. That, and Vikings.
 
Man, I don't know how I miss these threads. I think if I don't check in for half a day, they sink to the bottom of the page before I see them.

I love the drums, especially everything in the high's: The cymbals, hats, click in the bass drum. I feel as if the snare can bite a little bit more, but certainly still sounds great. Are the toms electronic??? Nice panning on the kit.

I can't comment on the keyboards because I'm not a keyboard kind of guy...In fact I generally hate keyboards, but I understand how a song like this would absloutely need them. Nice bass sound, and overall great playing on everything. Cleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaannnnn sounding production, and as always very smooooth performance.

That's the church's Roland V-club kit, I took kit #27 ("studio") and modded it a bit to my taste. I LOOOOOOVE the low toms on this kit. I wish I could pirate the sounds into the brain on my V-Stage... It's weird, but I'm so used to the rubber pads on the v-club, that I play better on that kit than on the mesh pads on my V-stage.

The way the praise band works live is that this very drum part is played, (I can the drum parts, as we can't find a drummer that can play a timed show tightly) and there is a different base keyboard part, our keyboard player plays organ patches over it, and there;s a 4-man horn section all accompanying 8 singers of varying skil. This recording is all me though.

Someday, I wanna collab with you somehow. You can teach me to RAWK.
 
I downloaded this yesterday, and have listgened a few times, in between other tracks, and tried to compare it, and find stuff to pick out. All I can really find, is the whole mix seems to be a bit heavy on the lows. They aren't bad, or anything, just they are louder than some of the other parts. Not just the Bass guitar, all the lower register sounds. Maybe if you could drop them just a little, as the tune is very upbeat, and happy sounding. Also, this could just be a personal preference thing on my part. I put it into Audition, ran a Parametric EQ on it, and took the lows down about 3 db, and it seemed to sound better, to me.... :confused:

Hey, I've had this going in the background for a few minutes. Very nice. I like the piano in the mix, really adds a lot IMO.

Just a suggestion... the bass does sound a bit louder in the mix, but maybe instead of lowering the volume, try cutting some higher frequencies and see how it sounds. It just sounds to me like there's some high end in the bass that gets in the way a bit at times and it might sound just right if you cut it a bit.

Overall, sounds like a solid track ;)

The dog and the snake nail it... :eek: :D

That's what happens when you master at too low a volume, you overcompensate the lows... :) The final cut will be more even... :)
