Feedback in Garageband

I have a consistent problem of feedback when I'm recording guitar into Garageband. I either go straight in from my guitar or through a Roland microcube but the result is the same: feedback that cuts out the monitor and the recording.

Any suggestions? I was thinking of a Cakewalk usb-audio inferace (UM-AG, I think) rather than a more complex interface as I don't need too much control and I already use the usb--midi interface and am happy with it.

Basically, how do I stop the guitar feeding back when I'm recording in Garageband?

Feedback from a guitar usually results from the proximity of the pickups to the amp. With that said, it could also be that you are recording too hot.

Try this: turn down the gain control on garageband when you are recording, and try facing yourself in a different direction, or move away from the amp/interface/computer and see what happens.

Barring that, maybe someone else can chime in. I have never used a computer to record. I use a multitracker and send the tracks to pc to mix.

The feedback could be coming from your studio monitors. If your guitar amp/mic is in the same room as your computer/monitors then mute the monitors while you record and un-mute them for playback.

Thanks for these comments. I'll try turning the gain down and see if that helps. When I've messed with this before I end up turning the signal so low there is nothing to record.

With the monitors, it detects feedback even if I use headphones and no monitors. It will record with the monitors switched off but then I can't hear the rhythm tracks that I'm recording to.

Thanks both for the tips about amp & pickup placement. I've never been really sure what causes feedback. This gives me something to experiment with.

Just pull down the fader on the track you're tracking. It won't affect the recording, just the monitor level.
