Feed mic preamp to Toneport DI unbalanced input?

I have a Toneport DI with single "unbalanced" 1/4 instrument input. I plugged the output of a mic preamp into this input and it seems to record ok. But is this going to give me much worse quality than I would get if I had the Toneport UX1 and plugged the the mic preamp output into one (either the left or right channel) of the stereo "line level" inputs instead?

I am using a Studio Projects B1 mic and VTB1 preamp (which has "balanced" 1/4" and XLR outputs).

I also find the Toneport DI to have a very low a signal when recording guitar and bass "dry" (when bypassing Gearbox tones, for later applying gearbox VST plugin), so I use the DI input on the VTB1 to amplify the signal from the guitar and bass and feed the preamp output to the "unbalanced" Toneport DI input. Is that non-ideal? (Why is the signal recorded dry from the Toneport DI so low, anyways?)
