I have been slowly building a project studio in my basement for the past 4 months. I currently have four mics (2 c3000's, 1 sm-57, and an Oktava mc-012 (yes, from the sound room only- I am on that bandwagon 
)).
What mic would you get next (in the $200-300 range)? I'm considering selling one of the c3000's, so that I can invest in another mic with different character.
I am an ex-studio tracking and mastering engineer (used to work for Sony Music) so I know that there are plenty of better, more expensive mics out there. My studio does not have the monitoring or mic-pre quality to justify the expense of high end AKG, Neumann, Schoeps, etc. And I certainly can't go vintage.
And what would you say would be the most economical, but highest quality mics for a stereo pair? I want a nice clean (but relatively cheap) xy image for recording live acoustical events.
And while I'm blabbing I thought I might bring up the Sound Room again, though please don't use this as a subject in the thread of my topic. I bought the mc-012 from the guitar center and after talking to Taylor at the sound room, promptly returned the GC mic and bought one from the sound room (www.oktava.com). Taylor did not say anything bad about GC. In fact, I was embarrassed to admit I had purchase the mic from GC. Taylor just let me know what kind of testing that they put their oktavas through before giving them the okay. That was worth the $30 extra that I paid him. I have always tried to avoid making purchases from GC, because my experience has been that they are mostly schlocky salesmen who will say "very cool choice" to whatever you decide to buy (even if its the Ronco Robo-Mic).
