FD-8 to CPU

Hey everyone, this is my first post so I hope I did it right.
Here's my problem...
I have an FD-8 and I've always used it with a Quadraverb and a DOD Comp/Gate/Limiter. I generally use SM-57's. I mix down to a Phillips CD burner via opitical. I have to use Audio Only Cd's which gets expensive because if you think you've got everything the way you want it you have to finalize. End of CD. I love using my FD-8, so heres what I want to do and maybe you can tell me if it's feasible. I want to go from the FD-8 to my computer, use a cheap software program to mix (levels, FX, all around sound) it down and burn it on my CPU using regular CD-R's or CD-RW's. The guy at Sam Ash told me this could be done using a US-122 interface. Just plug the FD-8 into the interface, plug the interface into the usb port on my CPU and that's that. I don't want to use the interface alone to record, I want to dump all tracks on the FD-8 and mix on the CPU. Can this be done?

P.S. my Keyboard player just bought and MR-8 and I didn't care for it. So I'm pretty stubborn (and cheap) about keeping the FD-8

Thanks,

Yeah, forget the MR8,... the FD8 blows it away!

Anyway, I think your best bet would be to use the ADAT-I/O function to dump all the FD8's tracks to the 'puter. That's the optical "light-pipe" technology. THAT's the easiest way to import or export 8 discrete tracks to/from the FD8, and it will preserve the discrete 8-track format.

That's to the best of my knowledge, upon study & use of the FD8, although I've not utilized the ADAT-I/O function myself, first hand.

Get an ADAT-I/O compatible PCI audio card for the 'puter, and you should be good to go!

HINT: The US122 may not be the ideal interface, or fit to your specific needs, and it may introduce other problems that lie outside your main focus, of the FD8 & importing to the 'puter.

Thanks For info

That's what I was thinking too. But that's also what I was fearing. It's looks pretty complicated (set midi sync, set mtc offset, set frame rate, set device id number, ect.) and basically I'm knot vary brite. Just kidding. If I did it that way, would I be able to control the FD-8 from the CPU?

Thanks again,

Hi I'm new here. I just bought an FD-8 and i have a question about data transfer. seeing as this thread in a way deals with my question, i thought i'd post here instead of starting a new thread.

What i am wondering is if there is some way to transfer my music data from the fd-8 to my PC, going from the optical out jack on the fd-8, to a USB port on my PC. i think in one of the above posts it was said that it could be done by getting an optical-compatible sound card, but i was wondering if there is some converter i could use that is optical-to-USB, so that i dont have to purchase another card.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated..

edit: maybe the zalman zm-rssc could do the job? it connects to a PC via USB and has an optical connection.

I plan on doing something similar to this with my DMT-8vl, once I get the jog-shuttle dial fixed. The DMT8vl can run two channels out via SP/DIF, and I'm going to put these two channels into the PC through an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card. I've got a brand-new Dell PC coming next week to set it all up on.

Best,

Tim
