Favourite distortion pedal ??

Sort of like the tube distortion thread but I was wondering what everyones favourite distortion pedal is. I would like to try something new and could use a few suggestions. So far my favourite has been the Rat. Love that pedal !!! I use to really like the tube screamer but that Rat won me over. So what's your fav?

My setup

I have a Boss Blues Driver that will push a hot tube amp nicely. Pretty smooth distortion.

For the metal sound I like the digitech death metal pedal.... it's WAY over the top as far as distortion goes.

For a more punk sound, I love the Dano Fab Tone. In my opinion the dano fab tone is the best underrated distortion pedal around.

For a lead tone, I also like the tubescreamer.

For fuzz, you gotta reach for the black cat remake of the superfuzz. It doesn't get much fuzzier than that (I hate that I sold mine.) But a big muff is also a really good choice.

For multiple distortion setting on one pedal, the line 6 distortion modeler is a wonderful pedal.

But for the price of any of thoose distortion pedals (if you bought them new) you could buy a used pod 2.0 on ebay. I got one a while back for 100 bucks. And I'm insanely happy with it.... It may not be an analog pedal, but a lot of my favs aren't anyway. Plus it has some much other stuff too.

Best metal pedal

I had the Boss, the Digitech, the DOD, blah blah.. I sold them all and gave up on metal pedals.

Then I decided to try the $14 Danelectro metal pedal and it blew me away. I run it through a Fender full stack on clean and it really screams metal tone. Try one, you will be shocked at how good a fifteen buck pedal sounds.

Some nice choices. I think I'll try out one off the fuzz pedals next.

I've never tried a Danelectro but for 15 bucks  what the hell

Unrelated to just dist pedals. But I completely agree, some of thoose mini danos are just flat awesome..... I had the fish and chips 7 band eq in my rig for a long time. (I just got a 31 band, so I really didn't need it anymore.)

But seriously though that little f & c eq could help out almost any set up. Dialing in the "pefect" eq setting can be really difficult for me. But with the little F & C, I'd get my amp "close enough" and then use that little mofo. It was also a for doing a solo and needing a little different sound on the solo, and a volume boost.

Everybody should seriously own one of thoose in my opinion. :D

Most distortion pedals just make me cringe to think about them, but I don't mind using an overdrive pedal in front of my amp to supercharge it just a little sometimes. For that I use a MXR Wylde overdrive.

I'm with you on this one. I have yet to hear the sound of an actual distortion pedal that I could even stand, much less like. An overdrive pedal pretty much just lets you push the more natural distortion of your preamp farther than it would normally go.

I have one of those fish and chips EQ pedals first in my line to shape my pickup because it doesn't have a great sound or enough output (eventually getting a new one, but until then, I'll deal). It gets fed into a Rat 2, which I think has the richest distortion I've heard through a pedal. I can't get a good sound out of the Rat without the EQ pedal though. I think it's just my stock humbucker, which is obnoxiously shrilly and boomy. These two pedals go into my Fender Champ DSP, one of those SS amps from a couple years ago. Not a bad sound for what I have, I must say.

i just bought one of those cheap danelectro fad metal dist pedal and as soon as i played my first chord with it ,it just blew me away the sounds are awesome so much better than all the other pedals ive tried which mostly include boss

There's a DIY pedal out there called a Brown Sound In A Bow II that does a pretty damn good emulation of a Marshall stack cranked. Search for BSIAB II, someone might sell them. If not, you can always make it yourself.

here's a +1 on the Fabtone. I think it's got a great sound to it--the problem is that i could never get it to hold Unity Gain right. when i kick in my drive, i like it to be at the same volume that i was playing clean at......and the Fabtone was either too quiet or too loud. i'm suspecting a crappy resistor in there, but i'm lazy.

i just recently picked up a Visual Sound "Jekyll and Hyde" and that pedal blows all the other ones i've ever used (including the fabtone) away.

one side is an overdrive modeled after a tubescreamer TS808, and it's definitely better sounding than my buddy's TS9. the other side is distortion, and it's got such a flexible range of tones that it's not even funny.

i mean, there's nary a sound i can't get from that thing......unless it's maybe that death metal chugga sound...and that's prolly b/c i haven't tried (or detuned my guitar to C, etc).

it's not cheap, but man that thing kicks ass. the other guitarist in my band said "man, what'd you do to your distortion sound? it sounds killer!" that was all i needed to hear. :D

cheers,
wade

I wonder if the distortion side uses the same chip as the old proco rat because it sounds almost identical to my vintage Rat, but with more tweakability. ALSO, you can use BOTH sides at the same time to create a sound all your own. So it's kind of like having a 3 channel amp in a pedal.

I second the recommendation on this one.

Boss

Boss Super Feedbacker and Distortion circa 1980-something.

Recently I had it for sale, buyer with cash in hand....tested it to make sure it worked and it sounded so good I couldn't sell it.

Nothing beats natural tube overdrive but if I do need a little extra zing I use the Boss.
