Let's talk about some plugins that are designed to mess with your sounds in fun and creative ways....no boring standard engineer tools...just the fun stuff.
My favorites are (all free!):
Prosoniq's Northpole resonant filter. This thing I just use all the freaking time...anytime I need a rez filter it's the first thing I grab. It's also got a real nasty distortion setting and a delay with wicked feedback. I've used it on several recordings.

PSP Audioware's Pianoverb. A "piano string" reverb plugin...really super cool for creating eerie reverb trails that detune.

iZotope's Vinyl. Basically a record & record player simulator. This thing sounds very real, and the interface is a freaking blast to use! Great for creating lofi vinyl sounds when ripping off portishead!

BJ Lofi. Nothing fancy about this plugin...it just destroys sound. I used it on "our trip to the apocalypse"...painful!

JS Humanizer. Again nothing fancy, but some really interesting sounds can be created for sure!

Big Tick Cheese Machine. A free VST Instrument that creates very nice cheesy synth tones...the ultimate in smooth sounding cliche...used it on "crawling with the ants".

RGC Audio Triangle II. Another VSTi...a super cool synth. So many knobs you'll crap yourself.
