Im starting a basic home studio setup for developing songs, recording demos and hopefully one day to help with recording an album. I play rock/alternative and acoustic songs. I'll also have the preamps on my Delta 66 omni studio but im going to be buying another preamp. I've narrowed it down to these two so far. The envioce is a bit cheaper than the fatman but the fatman has presets (which could help someone starting out like me). Which do you to reccomend? I will be buying a better preamp in about 6 months but i'd still like something that i can use long term. Im almosts certain that i can use the fatman as a stand alone compressor as well as a preamp, can i do this with the envoice too? Also which one has better compression as well as sound quality,
Cheers

Maybe some one else has another tube preamp (with compressor preferably) that they could reccomend for about the same price.

I just got the Mindprint 2 days ago,and have cut 2 bass and 1 acoustic guitar track with it so far.It sounds very good.I got the digital output card which allows another mono pre to be converted alomg with the Mindprint.I've never used the Fatman.

I have the Envoice, and to say I'm happy with it would be a huge understatement. It's an extemely versatile unit, and yes, it has a compressor!

With the extion card does that mean i can use the SPDIF to insert to tracks, add compression, EQ and tube saturation to them and run it through the SPDIF out to two new tracks?

I have the Fatman and an Envoice and the Envoice is the better all around unit of the two. The Fatman has a little too much color for it to e your inly mic pre and presets are greatly over rated.

well that just about settles it i think ill have to go for the Envoice
Thanks everyone

I've just seen the focusrite trak master for about the same price. It looks good (and ofcourse its a focusrite which should mean quality) but it does only have tube emulation. Would this be a problem/dissadvantage?

Um,yes...

Like I said I just got the unit a few days ago,but according to the manual, with the digital card, you can come in to the Envoice through S/PDIF,process your track, and come back in to your recorder through the S/PDIF out of the Envoice, essentially using it as you would an external FX unit.I've yet to actually try this, however.

Has anyone got/heard the focusrite trak master . Any ideas how it stacks up against the Envoice. At this stage im going to get the Envoice but a bit more feedback might help.

Thanks line ive seen it at factory sound of $895, but ill see if i can get the price down from the place you recommened.

ive just added a Joe Meek VC1 to my gear list which is an awesome 'studio channel'. it's a preamp and a compressor, with an enhancer. The compression is awesome, you can really push it to an extreme. the input stage has LOADS of headroom, i mean loads!

I would have to agree with LongWaveStudio

I have 2 VC1Q's now and can't say enough about them.. And as far as the color of JoeMeek goes, sure its not good for everything but its good for a LOT and who would'nt like that old brittish board sound.. And if you don't there is an exciter knob and some eq that will brighten it right up.. The optical compressor kicks and yes it has a shi&load of headroom! Anyway I have some stuff in the mixing clinic you can listen too as well as 2 of the demos on my website...

The two demos on my site are

How Does it Feel
VC1Q on: Vocals, Guitar, Bass(Direct through the 1/4 on the front)

I Still Do
VC1Q on : EVERYTHING (This was a 5 Track demo we did in a rush)

Anyway there is my testimonial of the Meek shit ;-)
