Fast track pro still effective??
i'm gonna start to build my home studio and i need to buy an interface.
what do you think about fast track pro, nowadays ? any change about usb speed? still good for recording? what you guys recommend me?
it works with 64bits windows 7?

I was recently able to find a new driver for Win7 64 bit for my Profire Lightbridge but it took some searching.

Frankly, much as I'm an M Audio fan, until Avid and M Audio sort out what's happening, I'd be wary of buying any of their stuff.

Have a look at the Focusrite range--similar price range and some decent gear without the "will they keep supporting it" hassle.

but the range is not compatible with pro tools, or is it? i was looking for something with pro tools included ;s

Only avid/maudio products will have pro tools included.

The hardware ties were dropped a while back, so you can buy whatever interface you like. (please check to be certain. I'm sure there are exceptions)

Any up to date version of Protools will handle pretty well all decent interfaces.

Frankly, I don't put too much stock in the "included" Protools that comes/came with MAudio stuff. It's always a stripped down version, intended more as a teaser to persuade you to invest in the "grown up" versions of PT. Unless you have specific needs to use Protools, I believe you can probably do better for your money.

(I used Protools for years at work and never really liked the interface--for home use I invested in different software. However, everyone is different and it's worth making use of the limited time free trials to see what suits you.)

Do you have a strong familiarity with Protools, or a need to be compatible with some other setup?

If so, I'd advice you to look elsewhere. I've been a PT user since 6.*, and if I'd any sense I'd move to Reaper.

I agree that M-Audio/Avid have somewhat gone to H in a handbasket as far as customer service is concerned but you can still find drivers and such if you hack around a bit.

But none of that detracts from the Fast track pro being a solid performer and well suited as an entry level AI.

Its main strengths are the reliability of both its drivers and the hardware. In 7 years of Forumizing I have never read of one going wrong and they must have outsold every other usb AI on the Planet?
They are not perfect! The mic amps are clean but low in gain, you really need a capacitor mic with one. The headphone output level is just "adequate" (but then I AM registered deaf!). But on the plus side they just bloody work, on anything! They are one of few AIs with inserts and one of VERY few that can work stand alone, i.e. put 9volts on one and you have a mic pre, a line/guitar pre and a S/PDIF converter sans computer.

The NI Ka6 is a much better AI but the Pro will do you for now sir!

Dave.
