Ok been mixing one of our tracks. Please give full criticism to make it sound better. All advice / feedback appreciated.

The vocals are kinda buried behind the wall of guitars. The high lead guitar running through the song is a bit too piercing and seems to cloud the whole production in kind of noisy fog. Those are my impressions of the mix, the song itself is pretty cool though

Ok that's interesting. Can see what you mean with the lead but I thought the vocals seemed to stand out enough (don't want them overpowering everything else). Would like to hear some others opinions on it but yeah I'll muck around with the lead.

Compressor is getting a workout here... the guitars are all very very overdriven; taken singularly, they each sound good, but cumulatively, they are too much, I think. They do, as a group, bury the vocals, as Bulls Hit suggests. There's a general lack of focus and power in the low end. the kick drum is more of a *pip* than a thud. The intro of the bridge section has better balance, until the lead guitar comes back in... Overall I'd say the compressor is wound up a little tight for my personal taste. I really enjoyed the vocal styling, I would like to have heard it better, and the groove was cool; but it needed a bit more punch....

The high lead does generate ear fatigue quickly.
The bass drum seems more Milo tin lid than chest cavity impact.
I'm wracking my brain for the vocal reference point. It'll come to me when I've finsihed typing - as usual.

Ok thanks for info guys. I do struggle to get lead to sit well in the few mixes I've done so far. I actually don't think the lead is that high level in the mix. Maybe it's just panned too far to one side or I need to find a better tone. I've cut off a lot of the low end on it but maybe that's made it a bit too distinct. Will have to have a fiddle.

I'm struggling to know how to get kick sounding better. From memory (not at home now) I scooped out at 150 and boosted around 90 and another boost at 1k odd I think to get the click. I then added an ableton punch effect, no individual compression on kick.

When I've tried boosting the low end any more it's just sounded too boomy. Any tips on getting it thuddier without it booming? I'll have another little play tonight and re-upload for further tips.

Take away some of the 1kHz & toss the scoop.
individual compression on the kick...probably.

Ok guys. Took off compression from the mix send completely and just kept compression on individual tracks (and drum group). Changed Kick drum to be a lot bassier and lose the click.

Completely retracked a lot of the guitar parts (I'm the bassist so it's of variable quality) and made the lead effect a lot cleaner.

Think vocals are coming through batter too. Let me know if you think I'm heading in the right direction?

Vocals sound like a distorted Bowie from TMWSTWorld era & there are some moments when it's stylistically there as well.
Kick sounds MUCH better.
The drums just before the rebuild are a little naked.

Hmm have a couple of ideas for that. One thing I'm going to try (may sound sh1t) is having sort of a bar audience sound before and during the initial riff and then some sort of w00ts and cheering during that breakdown.. Otherwise maybe just some guitar feedback or something... Will see.

I think the bass guitar is causing my headphones to pop a bit. Did you have issues with that on what you were listening to it on? Sounded fine on my speakers.
