EZCD Creator 5 - Stupid bug still present

I posted something on this subject some months ago, regarding EZCD 3X and 4X. Here is an update.

When you install EZCD Creator 3X or 4X the install overwrites several important system .DLL files with its own versions. This does not affect most things but is fatal if you have a USB Compact Flash reader. Simply placing a flash card in the reader in this case causes an instant system crash.

You can fix the problem by reverting back to the prior versions of the .DLLs, which the EZCD install re-labels as .BAK You can get more information on this problem from either of the following sites:

http://www.sandisk.com/imagemate/default.htm

http://ask.roxio.com/cgi-bin/roxio_...7&2715=&15=2&2716=&57=faq&58=&2900=CxReErcTLK

The second link is really buried in the EZCD site - I guess they don't want to actually help anyone who has been screwed over by their defective product(s).

Now for the REALLY stupid part -

It's bad enough that their software overwrote system files. But now they have come up out with new, "improved" version 5 and guess what? IT STILL DOES IT. However instead of just crashing the machine it now simply makes your card reader unusable. When you install Version 5 it first insists that you must uninstall 4 first (couldn't they have put this in their install program). Then you can install 5 at which point it overwrites your files (again).

You know I was just reading the Mac vs. PC post. I love my PCs, I have no problem in picking them over a Mac, but problems like this are what give PCs a bad name. You would think that after 3 versions the IDIOTS who wrote this program would have gotton the message. But stupidity and arrogence rule the day.

Since EZCD seems to have a near monopoly on CD writing software, tens of thousands of people will no doubt have their operating systems damaged by this problem. Many will never know it if they are not using USB devices. But many others will suffer a lot of grief.

Here's one more bit -

Turns out there is another EZCD bug from version 4.03 that carried over to version 5. If you have Internet Explorer version 5.5 you will get a conflict when upgadeing from 4.02 to 4.03, and possibly when using version 5 as well. This is true in any OS.

A registry patch to fix this is available from Roxio (parent company of Adaptec who have taken over EZCD support). You can find the patch listed at:

http://www.roxio.com/en/support/filelist.html

Go about halfway down the page, you will find the patch listed as:

ecdc v402x ie55 req-up.reg

You are dead on RWhite ! I purchased a SanDisk flash reader to make the job of downloading photos off my digital camera a snap. I also had Adaptec EZ CD Creator 4.0 installed and I got the dreaded blue screen of death . . . several times before I went to the Sandisk site and found the multi-level fix.

1)First to Adaptec ( Now Roxio ) to update to 4.02 . . . there website sucked and it took a half hour just to sort through all the fluff and find it.
2 ) Back to SandDisk to get the patch to run after the upgrade to 4.02 . . . at least SanDisk had the information . . . Roxio doesn't.

Well, anyway all is working fine now. Thanks for the information. I won't be upgrading to 5.0 anytime soon. There ought to be a law against these software companies rewriting file extensions. Ever since I bought a Turtle Beach Card from Voyetra, all my wav files are called voywavs . . holy shit, whats next
adobejpgs ?

PAPicker
