Nature of Force
Hey guys, new song. Just click the link in my sub, and listen.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Soundclick ruined the quality, but it's still audible.

The toms is the intro are completely ruined by being too sharply gated, it gives them a cheap drum machine feel that I don't think belongs.

The guitars are a little too ambient for my tastes as well. I think if you pulled the reverb down quite a bit that it would help tremendously.

Those two are my only main criticisms. Otherwise I really like the song and the mix. The acoustic tone is great. I'd pull the bass up a tad. If you have the hats on their own channel I'd pull them down a bit because they're way over the main drums, as is the ride.

Ok I guess I had more criticisms because the song is still playing, but the electric guitar parts are great. The whole thing sounds very Satriani to me, maybe a touch of Vai. I want to hear the electric guitar a little more, but the acoustic leads are great. At 2:40 it's very short, so you have plenty of room to open it up a bit and explore a little more.

Great song.

*Cough Cough* They were sampled drums, so that's why it sounds fake... I tried adjusting the hi hat and the ride with the MIDI Velocity, but it didn't help much. The guitars have VERY little reverb on them, so it might just be the ambiance of the song. This is actually a song for a contest, so it had to be under 3 minutes. Other than that, I will bring up the basses. Thanks for checking it out!

I kind of like the acoustic tone. I agree there might be a *tad* too much room sound (or whatever) in there. I personally would have traded that for a bit more brightness. But no big deal.... probably just a taste thing.

Regarding the bass, I don't know, I wouldn't turn it up at all. In fact, I was going to ask you about what kind (if any) of compression you have on the bass because I thought it could use some evening out. Disclaimer: I'm listening through a stereo in a less-than-ideal room so maybe that's the issue.

Great performance, good shit all around.

Matt

Soundclick isn't as detrimental to the sound as mspace, utub & vernat amongst others - plus there's the download option for better quality still - until we can post wav. files all will be moot.
Nice work, leans a bit to the side in my ears.
the bass could use a little definition an even ness.
Cool stuff.

On the bass, I Just EQed some of the mids down, and I compressed it with a fast attack and a 3:1 ratio. I used parallel compression to fatten it up.

Which side is it leaning to?

Nice tune, nice playing...totally agree with the reverb comment..turn it down a notch...and the drums aren't the best, which is a shame because the rest of the compositions really good..

what program are you using for them?

may be time to invest in superior drummer ;)

very good work apart from that

i liked it alot, especially the beginning. Are you using an ovation or a 12 string in this? I liked its sound alot.

I'm using the drums in Drop Zone in Sonar Home Studio 6

Thanks for listening. I'm still not hearing all that much reverb, so I'll dry it off a little, and upload it

Neither! I'm actually using a crappy "Oscar Schmidt" acoustic guitar that was found in an attic, and I mic'ed it with an SM58... A little unorthodox, but it sounds good.

There's a lot good in your feel for arrangement. Introducing the electric guitars in a theme later in the somg was a highlight.

The lead acoustic in the beginning is a little sloppy, and might need some grace notes and anticipations to lift it from the ground. [Are there words? I often find it helpful, when playing a head like that, to sing the words in my mind, and play the phrasing on the guitar. Lends some lyricism to the guitar part.]

The drums sound strange in the beginning...but fit better in the full mix.

Good instincts, musically. Just pay closer attention to the actual performance...shed the parts a little more...don't settle for parts that roll off too shakey. Discipline and patience!!

The intro was a little long...would work with something like the later E-guit theme played on a solo flute or something like that...the re-visit later will just add to an already good arrangement.

The recorded sounds...bass [has a direct, farty quality] and drums, mostly. I think I hear a lot of less than beneficial room in the drum recording. I think?

As I said before, this song is for a contest. I have to write music out with it. It's an odd balance between intricate parts, and simple ones just for the simplicity of writing it all out and getting it right. I REALLY REALLY need a DI box for my bass or something. I know it sounds crappy. I don't have a bass amp to mic... So I've been going direct into the mixer. I messed with the EQ a lot. It's not the sound I'm looking for. The drums had a little reverb on them. I thought the dry drums sounded too, uh, dry. They don't fit well in the mix in general. Oh well, you learn from your mistakes, right?

Very cool sound, this is great chill music. It's rich and heartwarming and makes you feel all happy inside. And wow, 1:45 caught me off guard.. nice breakdown. It has a great feeling throughout.
