One Hit Wonder
OK, so it's not really a Cakewalk question, but give me a little leeway...

As a result of a friend upgrading his computer system, I inherited his old system. P2, 333 MHz, maybe 256M memory. I'm wondering if I can make any use of this in conjuction with my DAW. Perhaps for holding sample libraries or something.

If this is feasible, how would I go about it? Network the two together and simply put the sample library on the second computer?

I hate to see this thing go to waste. Does it have any useful life left in it?

Run your VST plug-ins off the secondary machine (kinda like a UAD card except via Ethernet).

Or you could use it to process MIDI. MIDI does not take the horsepower that audio does. Fit it with an SBLive and bring the audio return back into a channel in your mixer.

All kinds of uses for secondary computers....

I was going to proffer the same ideas as TimOBrien.

I don't know about using second PC as VST effect machine, but I do use second DAW as MIDI machine. Yes, it's worth the heat, dachay, specialy when you run bunch instance of sample realtime. Run your sampler / soft synth in another machine, and the other as sequencer. I use MIDIviaNET to connect 'em. It allows 2 PCs to playback / transmit synchronized MIDI via network. No more need to sacrifice Midi in/out ports. Best of all, it's freeware (actualy, the author call it "Wishware"). I'm not sure if it's still available on the net to download, but you can PM me if you need the copy.

Can also put it in another room and back up your audio files to it

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll give some more thought. The hard drive on this computer is a bit small (8 GB), so there's a limit on its use for backups. I know I could install another, but I'm not really looking to invest any money in this.

one computer could be locked away and could hold all the porn....
that way you will never be busted by other people working on your real DAW

8gigs of porn would'nt get Dachay through lunch.

I've tried using older computers for other stuff, such as MIDI and libraries. But it turned out it was way easier to just do it from the main computer...
