External Wave Editor

In n-track there is a button described as 'launch external wave editor'. Now this implies that there are necessary tasks for which another program is needed.

Now still being a newbie and not all that familiar with everything out there I have this question.

What do you need a separate wave editing package to do? Which one do you personally use for it?

I use SoundForge for mastering, tweaking individual tracks and downsampling from 24bit to 16bit finals and creating MP3s.
