This isn't quite the right place, but frankly I'm not sure which is.
Basically, I need something to convert from an optical SPDIF input from a Triton (24/48 or 24/96 as I understand it) into an analogue signal, preferably for a sensible price and relatively small.

Ideally I'd like to keep the computer out of the loop entirely, but the idea of running it off the PC's USB power supply to avoid yet another wall-wart is a tempting one.
Currently I'm using a discarded Edirol UA25 to do the job, but he problem is that the USB bus noise is getting into the signal (which is why I discarded it before).

As I say, a standalone DAC would be best, but a USB soundcard like the Edirol that will pass SPDIF into analogue while it's operating would be fine.

Any suggestions?

Doesn't that Flying Cow just convert from optical to coaxial SPDIF (and vice versa)? I don't think it does actual DA conversion.

The Benchmark Media DAC-1 sounds great and does optical to analog conversion, but I'm pretty sure it is going to be too pricey for you.

Perhaps look at home stereo DA components, as they use optical SPDIF more commonly than pro audio gear.

No, it does D/A and A/D conversion. I use one here at the shop all the time for testing spdif signals.

Thanks for that, although it looks like it might be difficult to find.
I actually bought an Edirol UA-5 for this kind of purpose since there's a hack to convert it into a standalone DAC, but when the '25 went on the fritz I had to start using it as the main converter. I might look to see if I can find another one.

Alternatively if anyone knows a mod/fix for the UA25 to make it not suck, that would be really handy.

**EDIT**
Much as I distrust Creative, the Extigy is apparently supposed to work as a completely standalone DAC. Anyone tried this?
