External Sound Card?

I was asking around about my laptop's performance while using Cubase and someone suggested getting an external sound card. Can someone please fill me in on what that is exactly? I checked Amazon and I found some USB items called "External Sound Card Audio Adapter." Is this what I'm looking for and will it help my performance?
 
Probably not. Chances are that's a cheap jobby with similar components to what's built in.

Look for brandname hardware. Stuff that's designed for recording, and with dedicated drivers. Maudio/tascam/motu/presonus etc.
 
You want an Audio Interface. Go to Sweetwater.com to look through the vast selection. Then ask advice - specify what you are recording, how many individual trakcs you want to record at one time, and what your budget is.
