This might be a dumb question, but if I buy an external sound card, do I need to buy an interal soundcard for a laptop as well, or will the stock card work?

Yes, depending on what kind of laptop you have the stock soundcard will work (they tend to be Soundmax in the PC arena)....but it'll only give you so-so sound. I put the Echo Indigo I/O Cardbus in my laptop. It's just a little thing you stick in the card slot so it's like an internal/external soundcard. But the playback is pimp! There's none of that mouse 'noise' or anything when I run it, which makes it great when I play soft synths and samplers live. It just runs along the stock card, so if you want to you can set it up only for pro audio use or all use or minimal use etc...

I bought a soundblaster MP3+ for my laptop. It's still 16bit 44K, but it is a lot quieter than what is in my toshiba. One plus, it has built in sounds.

i really like my CREATIVE EXTIGY
it wasn't too expensive, its got some digital in and out,
great for dvd use, its got a remote controll, you can connect 6 speakers to it. .. can record up to 96 khz and 24 bit
its fun to use on laptops, or you can take it to some friends , plug it and it works if they got windows XP installed
BUT, i would not recommend this card for serious music-making,
i mean, if you compare the soundquality with M-audio cards, or WHATEVER the brand....jeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzz
its just a gamerz card or a DVD card.... superb for non-audiophiles
then, i'm gonna buy a MOTU 828

this is a Firewire card, the EXTIGY is a USB card
this means that you buy an external soundcard which looks nice, you can put it on your desc or so, connect it only with the USB or Firewire cable,
AND HOPLA, thats it
you don't need to put extra shit in your computer,
real easy if you wanna make music on a desctop AND laptop
