I am interested in purchasing an M-Audio DMP3 and have no firewire port in my laptop. What would be my best option for an external soundcard that is compatible with a DMP3?

Three are lots of choices of USB audio interfaces. You ay want to get one of those FIRST, then see about getting an external preamp unit after. Most USB interfaces have phantom power and preamps, you may find you don't need a separate unit.

All I need it for is a mic and guitar. But I only realistically need one input because I am recording seperately. See I get confused because it seems to me like they almost do the same thing??

The DMP3 outputs line level (-10dB / Nominal / Consumer) via TRS. So probably any interface that takes 1/4" TRS as line input. Which is a good majority of them. Make sure that they allow you to bypass their preamps as not all will allow that. The DMP3 is a TWO channel preamp, why limit yourself to just one channel? M-Audio Mobile Pre would work, but very limited by todays options. Lots of others out there. Emu 0404, That cakewalk thing (UA-25?), and others.
