does anyone use an external hard drive when recording?

if you do, could you explain to me how it works, is it faster than a hard drive thats in your computer even if the hard drive thats in your computer is a 7200 40 gb?

is it worth the purchase?
any and all info would be appreciated. thanks...

Mac or PC? How many tracks do you need to get across? If its an external SCSI or Firewire you should be okay. If its USB you might be limited by the transfer rate.

I use an external 80Gig firewire drive to supplement my internal drive. It chugs right along and handles everything that the internal drive can. The external drive is noticeably slower when mixing down audio (i.e. not in realtime) I have had no preformance problems with the realtime audio so far.

I also don't typically push either drive to the max, though. The max I've dealt with so far is 22 tracks at 24bit/44.1 all playing at once. I think that's my system I/O limit rather than the drive limits, though.
