I run pro tools from my macbook pro, which only has one FW400 port. Should I run firewire out of that to a port and then connect the Ext hard drive and 1814 interface to the port? Suggestions?

You probably dont want to have a FW drive on the same port as an audio interface. I would get a expresscard FW card and put the drive on that.

I don't see why you can't connect both to the single FW port. Audio isn't all that demanding. Let's say 8 tracks at 24bits/44.1kHz = roughly 1 Megabyte/sec. FW400 reaches 50MB/sec theoretically. That leaves you quite some headroom.
Just daisychain both devices together and connect them to your Macbook Pro. I'm pretty confident you'll be fine.

If this is an M-Audio FW1814, my only word of warning is that the M-Audio must be the first device in the chain and you must not put a hub before it. You should be able to chain other devices off the back side without difficulty. I have no idea why the FW1814 misbehaves if it isn't the first device, but it does.... Probably buggy FireWire silicon on the FW1814.... :)
