I recently purchased a Sony MDM-X4. I like the machine, but the instruction manual is pretty skimpy. My problem is, I am trying to hook up an external effects processor. Is there any way to record a track with effects and hear the effects while you are recording? Or is the effects loop just for mix-down? Any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to HEAR effects and not record them. The MD8, which I have in my studio, will do this. It actually takes more buttons to push to record effects on the original take.

Just discovered how bad manuals are? Welcome to the world of recording gear.

Plug in your effects box according to the directions. Do you have a dial which turns up effects on your recorder? The MD8 has plugs for two FX boxes and I have two of them hooked up. Your unit should have a similar function.

You should be able to hear the effects but they won't be recorded. I do this all of the time, even on my Yam DAW2816. It gives the singer some nice ambience. Then, at mixdown, I can adjust or completely change the FX input.

Check the directions with your FX box and then take another peek into your manual. Or, Check with Sony.
