so I think i'm going to get into a whole can of works for this one... but i'm struggling, so what the heck.

Ok, so I've got my aardvark q10's, and i've recorded stuff, and it's been fun... but now i'm starting to go further with my mix and add compression, effects, eq, etc... all from outboard processors. My questions is how I would go about setting it up. Here's an example... If i decided that my bass drum needs some compression, eq work, and I wan't to add slight reverb, all from outboard rack units. I guess it all comes back to the whole "how do I set up a patchbay so that I can add external effects to the mix" question. It just seems so complicated to run one track through, re-record it through the compression, then eq, then effects... then go to track two and repeat the same process. Also, I wouldn't be able listen to the new mix until AFTER i re-recorded it, meaning I would be doing this all "deaf". Oi, i'm just confused. Any help would be great.

You could use a mixer that offers inserts on it's channels. Then you will monitor off of the mixer.

That's a definite possibility, any suggestions on a good mixer then? I'd prefer something with 16 channels, but 8 would be all right too. Also, are there any that provide a separate output for each track? Thanks for the response

those look interesting, but do they offer individual outputs for each input? Do any mixers offer that? I'm having a hard time finding one if they do. Thanks for the info btw, very helpful.

Yeah .... well not every channel input, but on all of the mono inputs there are direct out (pre or post fader).
Take the M12 for example. It has 12 mono channels and 4 stereo channels.
That would give you 12 nice preamps, each with it's own direct out.
Check out the User guide PDF's on the Soundcraft web site.

Why are you rerecording every track after processing them?

If you're going to use hardware processors, just use a mixer to mix with outboard gear, but if you're bringing it back into the computer, why dont you just use software plugins?

Hey Phyl, where do you send the output after it goes through your outboard gear? Matta, I use some plugin's, but I really don't like them all that much. For some reason I can't tweak them to sound like I want them to.

one more question. If I were to record through a mixer into my Q10, would everything that goes through the mixer go into the computer. In other words, if I were recording drums, would the panning and eq go through to the software, or would I have to do all my panning in the software? Thanks you guys.
