Returned from the dead
Anyone ever try it? I need to make a cable run from my PC to my studio and I'm thinking of just extending my VGA cable using speaker wire or something similar. I'm not worried about how pristine and beautiful the image I get looks as long as it works.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Why not wander to to your local computer store and get an extension cable like they use all the time for data projectors and stuff?

Because the local computer store charges ridiculous prices for something that costs 7$ over the internet.
And if this doesn't work then I'm only out 7$ and 5 days for shipping, if it does work then I save 7$ which is no big deal anyways.
The way I see it, it's worth a shot.

Well, I suppose I'm gonna dive in. I assume that as long as the signal reaches it's destination everything should be okay.

If anyone's got any helpful advice or tips feel free to let me know it's too late :laughings::p

Speaker wires won't work. Those cables are specially constructed to minimize cross-talk and interference and improve data transfer. Spend the money, do it right. $12 gets you a 15ft extension.

Too bad, too. I just threw 3 of them away about 2 weeks ago. :(

Not only that but I ran out of speaker wire. There are 6 small wires and 3 thick wires. Who knew that each of the three thick wires were cleverly hiding two smaller wires :(

oh well, like I said, I'm only out 7$ plus 5 days shipping.

I got a Belden monitor extension, it was cheap, I think a 12 ft one was around $10 . I got it at a department store, Don Quixote, something like Walmart. It works great and the video is perfect.

I use 3 monitors with my Mac, and the long extension gets a video to my drumset. The Belden cables were especially nice - the thumbscrews you turn when you attach them were better designed than the standard ones I've seen.

Just go to ebay and search for "vga extension cable". You can get a 25 footer for $16.
