Exporting..why is file so big??

Slowing becoming un-noob.
So the band I'm in just got done recording our new demo. We recorded it in my backyard home studio. I export all my songs as stereo interleaved at 16bit 44khz or whatever the gauge is. But yeah, the suggested for putting on a cd, as people have told me. So the shortest of our 3 songs, which was about 2 minutes long, was 20 mb. These files are saved as .wav then the longest song we extracted which was 7 1/2 minutes long was 76 mb. Now I want to put all these on one cd.

So why are the files so f'ing big?

and how do I change it to make it smaller?
 
16 bit 44.1khz sample rate audio is 5mb per minute per channel. Thus, a stereo .wav file will be 10mb per minute.

You can get about 74 minutes of audio on a CD.

You can make it smaller, but you can't make an audio CD with anything other than 16 bit 44.1khz sample rate audio. That is the "red book" CD standard!

Yep. Audio at reasonable resoution makes for large files. Deal with it. :p Or settle for lower sound quality. :D

And give thanks that you don't work in video.
 
because that's the standard. About 5MB per minute, per channel. A CD holds about 80 minutes worth of audio.

To get it smaller, you'll have to record a faster song.

dude, I do every single day. And not just with file sizes. There are so many problems in the video world when trying to make things compatible with other devices or when working with conversions.

At least audio hasn't changed THAT much in the past 20 years. And the formats have remained pretty much the same standard.

So you're saying that I will be able to fit all three of these songs onto a cd because it's less than 74 minutes long? even though it's like a total of 130 mb?

a newer cd holds 800 mb - or 80 minutes of stereo 16bit/44.1khz music. older cd standards were 740 and 74 minutes as Ford Van said. Either way, 130mb will fit just fine......

A CD will hold either 740 meg or 800 meg depending on the CD. You will be fine.

Sample Rate:
Bit Depth X Sample Rate X Channels = Sample Rate.

So 16 Bits X 44100 Hz X 2 X 60 s = 84,672,000 Bits
84,672,000 Bits/8 Bits/Byte = 10,584,000 Bytes
10,584,000 Bytes/1024 Bytes/KB = 10,335 KB
10,335 KB/1024 KB/MB = 10 MB.

So that's why there's roughly 10 MB in a minute of stereo audio.

1,411,200 bps/1000 Bits/Kb = 1,411 Kbps
1,411 Kbps/1000 Kb/Mb = 1.41 Mbps
