Lava Lamp myth confirmed.

I just saw an episode of Mythbusters on TV where they heated up a lava lamp to see if it would explode. They placed the glass bottle directly on a hotplate set to low temp and sure enough, it exploded.

Kids, don't try this at home. :(

Yeah, saw that too. And they pointed out that the lamp would be lethal.

Did you see that huge speaker they built?!?

OMG!

But the lamp inside a laval lamp could never get as hot as the stove they set the thing on.

But yes, if the thing does get hot enough to explode, the shards of glass would be enough to kill you if you were sitting right next to the thing.

Recently i seen one explode. What i believe happend was that the bulb came in contact with the plastic sides. The temperature rose because of the burning plastic and Boom...toxic soup! Pretty nasty.

crazy! Yet another reason I'll never get one. :)

But, you've GOT to get one. It is considered a good luck charm for all studios, isn't it?

Yeah, I've read on this forum that it's required, but I don't get it personally. My Ren and Stimpy dolls are my good luck charms.

Man, I hate to see all that hard work and effort being put into your studio and no Lava Lamp in site....

It's like, mashed potatos and no gravy, ham and no burger, etc, etc. You get the idea. heh :D

Hmmm... Lessee.... sealed glass container filled with wax and oil....electric stove element.....apply large amounts of current.....thing explodes....

And anyone questioned that?

How about next time they just put a can of grapefruit sections directly on the stove to see if it explodes too?

i'd rather string up a bunch of dead bunnies. :D

Like Treeline says..any sealed container with a liquid that can boil, will explode if heated enough. Which is why I'm wondering why Christmas bubble lights don't explode   Same principle, no? Must be the composition of the liquid. Anyone know?

BTW, there is a coiled heat absorber in the bottom of the glass container of a lava lamp. Usually you can't see it because of the wax. Just thought I'd throw that in....nevermind. :D
fitZ

That ring at the bottom is what transfers the heat from the light bult into the container. If that somehow becomes dislodged on its side, the lava lamp won't work.

Why don't Christmas bubbles explode? Because they don't get hot enough.

And they call that a safety feature?

Hmm, I wonder what that absorber thing does with all of that heat after it is done collecting it? Wouldn't it have to vent it off somewhere?...like, say, into the oil and wax above? :D

Man, I'm so much smarter than all you guys - I just bought an extra computer and two apple cinema displays, I just leave it idle with a double lava lamp screen saver. No explosions, gives me a backup 'puter, DAMN am I smart...

(OK, so I'm not really that smart - but I'm smart enough that the above was only a joke :=)... Steve

You filthy little monkey!
:D

You fat sack of protoplasm!! EEEEEEEDIOT!!!!! Steeempy you FOOL!

just to be on the safe side I have (1) lava lamp (red), (1) Mr. potatoe head and (8) Old school GI Joes

There's a huge difference between a 45W bulb and a 1500W hot plate. After all, we cook french fries in vats of oil heated by 1500W of burners, and sticking french fries in your lava lamp will result in permanently raw french fries.

Though... you'd think they'd be smart and make the glass out of pyrex.
