Exciter/enhancer/sonic maximizer?????

Anyone know anything about running vocals thru an enhancer, or exicter, or sonic maximizer for a live performance?? What's the difference between these things (or do they pretty much do the same thing??) Someone told our guitar player that an exicter (I think he said exciter) would really beef up and clean our vocals. Any help appreciated.

I am not sure that any of these devices are going to offer up anything more than a bit of competency is setting a good house eq, gain structure, channel eq, and a good mic picking up a good singer will do! I have NEVER used enhancers in a live environment (15+ years of live sound work) and have never found myself wanting one.
