.... a newbie w. a laptop
dun Dun DUN

Alright so, this is my first post and I know its probably annoying as hell when someone wanders over here and asks a dumb question instead of taking the time to research it themselves... so i've been trying to make sense of all these info online as to what i would need to record into my laptop... i don't really have any exp. recording in analog and i've finding thats really making it hard to make sense of what i need.... lets say i bought myself a lalya or usb m-audio thingy (yes i know usb ain't so hot, but i'm so newbie that i don't really care so much, since i have no idea what im doing/ learning as i go) .. and i want to record just me singing and an acousitc guitar.... what are the inbetweens of hooking things up? This is a very embarressing questiong but what is an audio input?? (lol) I mean, it ain't a mic input, yes? so i'd need a mixer?
I'm into playing acousitc delta blues, but also love good hiphop. I was rased on beatles and dylan, and started playing guitar when i was a kid... teen years i was into the whole alternative and rock tihng, and of course i still love a good rock song, but i just love all the polyrthymes of rap/hiphop... i really want to get into my computer and just play around and see what comes of it... so in terms of software, i was thinking since as i mentioned i have no exp. in recording in analog, it would be silly to buy software that is sort of a virtual analog studio... i was thinking of getting Live 2.0. Anyone used it?
thanks for taking the time.

my 'remote location' setup is:

dell inspiron 8100 with both usb and firewire support. 1.2ghz 512mb with CDburner.

tascam us-428 usb recorder/mixer

fmr audio RNP mic preamp

you don't have to have the preamp you can instead just buy a phantom power unit. hook your microphone cable (the 3-prong cable) to the phantom power, and the phantom power to the usb-428. Rolls makes a phantom power doohicky for $50.
