Just wondering how you set that up. I tried placing a pair of C414 B-ULS mics in XY but it was too awkward, so I spaced them out. They work great as a spaced pair of overheads. Captured a very nice balance of a drum kit, along with a snare mic, kick mic, and room mic.

Also, a little off topic I know, but is there a plain cardioid equivalent of a C414? I didn't use any of the switches on mine whatsoever, although I only ever used them on one recording and then sold them. But, having not utilized those extra features, I was more than satisfied with just the unattenuated and uncut cardioid setting on the C414. Does AKG have a stripped down model that's like this, with the same sound?

I used to do it all the time. I just put them end to end (top to top) and spun them 90 degrees.

That's one of the ways that I tried it before deciding that I felt too weird about it. I guess I was just so used to seeing diagrams of SDCs laying directly on top of each other that I assumed I wouldn't get this kind of result from LDCs with their capsules being caged by a big metal filter, thus spacing them apart somewhat. I really should have auditioned it before giving into this impression.

Having the diaphragms 1/4 inch apart instead of 1/2 inch apart isn't a big deal.

they are kinda big and bulky. i used to use the stereo bar for my coles for the X/Y 414's. kinda expensive bit with that and an atlas stand it made setting up pretty easy.

re: cardioid: i don't think so. you can get them pretty cheap though. the C3000 or whatever it is is NOT the same mic as the BULS in cardioid.

Laters.

Take two matching cardiod LDC's and set them up exactly as you would set up a Blumlein pair...presto...instant LDC XY. It's an old trick from Michael Waegner. I record acoustic guitar with this setup all the time.
