Mr. Moon

Force of Naked
Background: I have been using my Alesis M1 MkII's for the last year and a half, but now my ears have gotten to the point that I can tell that they sound "too nice" for mixing. I know some folks who may be interested in purchasing them from me, and I may take the opportunity to upgrade to a "better" pair of active monitors which will more accurately reproduce and detail the midrange which is lacking on the M1 MkII's that I'm using. I also need to tighten up the low end, and I'm not talking about "my" rear end... :p

I went to a local shop and tried out a few pairs of monitors: Mackie 624's and 824's (I liked the midrange detail of the 624's better, but it wasn't a great room to test in) some Event 20/20's, some Tannoy's, and Genlac's (sp?). I really dug the 20/20's, but man! Everything I dug was way out of my price range. I don't do this stuff for a living or anything, so my livelihood doesn't depend on having the best tools to do the job, but I'd still like to find a pair of monitors that will translate the midrange and bass more accurately than what I have now.

So, my question basically revolves around the Event TR6XL's that I've seen in the music catalogs which I use as "research material" whilst sitting and thinking and doing whatever else one does in the restroom and/or at work. My local music shops don't have these in stock for me to check out personally, so I was wondering if anybody here has heard these and can compare/contrast them to/with the Alesis M1 MkII's, Event 20/20's, or any of the Mackie's I listed above.

The music I will be mixing will be heavier rock and acoustic rock, with the occasional "experimental" piece thrown in here and there (access my band's music page via the link in my sig if you want to get an idea of what we're doing; the first four tunes are heavy, the last is acoustic). I need to find monitors that have more detail in the midrange and a more "solid" low end. I would like to limit my spending to ~$600.00 for the pair. If I made my living at this stuff I'd be willing to spend more (as an investment), but at this time that is not possible.

TIA!

Mr Moon,

You can get passive 20/20s for $300, and have $300 left with which to buy a power amp.

Yo Moon over Miami: [nice tune]

Give a look and listen to the KRK ST8s -- they are passive but have an 8" woofer -- I just upgraded from my Yorkvilles to the KRK ST8s. Nice sound to the boxes, richer.

Didn't take me but 8 days to sell my Yorks -- they, too, are good boxes but only have a 6.5" woofer.

Price for the KRKs was actually LESS by a few pezzutos than the Yorks.

So, for a little under 200 pezzutos, you can get the KRKs and have a copious pile of greenbacks to fun away.
:D :) :D
