Event 20/20p's...how flat are they?

I borrowed a friend's Event 20/20p's and gave some previous mixes a listen. I hear almost no low end...the kick and bass are buried under the guitars, which seem to dominate. Those same mixes on computer speakers seemed to have about the right amount of kick, bass (some even a bit bass heavy), guitars, and vocals. Running a parametric up the spectrum, the 4KHz range seems very present on the Events, although SS Glen's hearing chart also suggests that's where hearing is most sensitive.

Is all that a matter of hearing a "flat" EQ curve? Are the 20/20p's bright without much low end? (and FWIW, I'm in a small room ~6' deep, ~8' wide, ~8' high with no treatment yet; though they didn't seem to have that much low end in a bigger room ~10' deep, ~20' wide, ~7' high)

first off what are you used to listening too? (what are your monitors) going from consumer grade speakers to studio monitors will usually sound weak in the bass, or it could be your room, if you notice in both rooms 2 dim or the same.

Yep

Yeah, I've got a se of 20/20's, and it does have light bass response. One of the forst mixes I did for a friend I ended up blowing some car speakers. Oops. You just gotta get used to um. I barley notice it now, but you gotta mix it at about half of what you think it should sound like. Its a good idea to set up a pair of counsumer speakers to switch it between as well.

Jonzo has those. They sound good but the low end is lacking. Remember the SOB recordings?

The monitors are most likely a LOT flatter than either room you're playing them in, and they should be plenty flat enough to be able to make a decent mix when properly setup and once your ears have learned them.

And, just to put things in the big picture, I'd give the exact same answer for just about any make/model of near field monitor in the 20/20's class.

Think of it this way: substitute the words "golf clubs" for the words "studio monitors". Whether you were asking about mid-range Nike or mid-range Titlest clubs, they'll be good enough to let you get a decent golf score as slong as the course is in proper shape and not overgrown, and once you have adjusted yourself to the new clubs OK.

No doubt, the room is going to be the final decision on how well the engineer will hear and "understand" ANY set of speakers.

But on a more personal level... The 20/20p's and a decent amp are (IMO/E) worlds better than those 20/20bas jobs... I couldn't get those things to translate if I set them up in the United Nations Press Pool.

really massive?.....you dont like the 20/20BAS? ....i just got a pair on Flea-bay, and i think they are a better step up from them junky m-audio Bx5 speakers i was toying around with..............

whats there to dislike about the older 20/20BAS series?

Had a set some time ago... I just couldn't get anything (I mean anything) to translate. Walked into a studio once with a pair of passives and couldn't make a bad sounding mix on them.

I know some people like them - I'm just not one of 'em.

Those and 824's... I don't get it.

Just goes to show that no two pairs of ears are the same.

Years ago when I was first getting started I used to sell audio gear. I learned three things early on when it comes to loudspeakers. The first was that there is no sure way of predicting which loudspeaker any given customer will prefer. The second was that "educated" ears do nothing to make the customers agreee more. In fact, the more allegedly discerning the ear, the more disagreement there is over what sounds "better". And the third is the loudspeakers are the one component about whcih "learned" customers have the most steadfast personal biases and prejudices.

My observation since then is that giving one experience as an audio engineer does almost nothing to change the three things described above. Everybody's senses are different, as are their sensibilities.

This is why there are dozens of makes and models of monitors out there, all rather close to "flat" on a technical level, but all sounding different, and why natural selection has not whittled the choices down to one monitor that everybody prefers.
