Which do you prefer and why (if you've heard both)?

I recently AB'd the Yorkville Passives and the 20/20s, as well as the YSM1p and the 20/20bas (with the Mackie 624). The passives were powered with a TA1600. My reference cds were: RamonesMania, A Hard Days Night, and Mr T. Experience's Revenge is Sweet and So Are You (closely related to most of my projects)

In both cases, the Events sounded like really nice hi-fi speakers. The 20/20bas were a little faster on the transients than the unpowered 20/20, but both failed in comparison to either YSM model (which were both floored by the mackies).

The bass response on the Events was better, as the Yorkvilles only go down to 40hz, but if you spend some time placing them right, the YSMs can give a pretty good picture (watch your room tone). Unless you're doing bass heavy dance music or hip-hop (in which case you'd need the Yorkville sub) I wouldn't consider it a deciding factor.
To me, the Yorkvilles sounded much more precise, like they were designed for mixing. I felt the Events were much more marketable as great home theater speakers.

In the end, I wanted the Mackies, but my bank account disagreed- I went with the powered Yorkvilles...they should be here on Monday. I believe I'll enjoy them :)

Thanks for your response. I sure hope that the Yorkvilles are better, because they're cheaper.

Anyone else have any opinions?

I think event would kill all the hi-fi competition under a grand. I think they should get out of the studio monitor business now and market all their so called 'monitors' to the hi-fi crowd. They would make a killing. I may actually pick up a pair of their new flagship precision 8s for my living room.

Yo All:

For the money -- IT'S THE YORKVILLES -- no question.

Oh, yes, there are better monitors at higher prices; but, for the home person and not at home person, Yorks will do a great job.

I speak only from owning the passives. I suspect the actives by York are also very good.

Green Hornet :D :p :p :p

hey green hornet do you have a sub or a secondary system? How do you find the low end translates? A lot of my stuff has a kinda heavy hip hop ish beat to it.

Watch out, ambi...

The YSM stuff only goes down to 40 hz...
Yorkville sells an additional sub for somewhere in the $300 ballpark

Above 40 hz, the sound very sweet and are a pleasant to listen to..

Just listen to some excellent records on any system, and you;ll learn what your mixes need to sound like

only 300 for the sub? That is pretty cheap, are they as well regarded as the YSM1's are?

Yea i want a powered set of them, very soon. With a delta 44 it should keep me going a short time

"A frequency response of 35 to 150Hz means the Yorkville YSS1 is capable of reinforcing the bottom end in virtually any mix situation."

If the sub only goes to 35hz, and the satalite goes to 40, what's the point?

I'm guessing the ysmi's don't techincally go to 40hz like most monitors, and it's not a really clear accurate reproduction of the frequencies. Is going to 35hz normal for a sub, or is this 150watt 12inch yorkville sub just a baby sub?

I'm not the person to answer about the sub...

But the YSM monitors do reach around 40 hz- that's so low that I cant really tell if it severly colored or not

I've gotten in the habit of just lopping off my kick drums and bass sounds at 40 hz so I don't blow anyones ears off on other systems. When I tried to cut them off at 45, I could tell a huge difference. That's enough to convince me they do make it to 40 hz

Ah that's good to know. so the question is will the extra 5 hz of bass extension really be worth the price of the sub? I understand it will give you more bass, but we don't want more bass do we, we want accurate bass!

To me, it's not. I like bass as much as anyone, but I could spend 300 dollars in a much more worthwhile spot right now. My tunes aren't designed to rattle any trunks; my personal tunes are written and recorded for children, and I don;t wanna hurt any precious young ear drums

If you're gonna do alot of hip/hop or dance music, I wouldn't recommend getting a sub and the YSM monitors- I would just look for a different set of speakers
