I've been digging through the threads constantly and have posted several threads but I've come to a few conclusions:

I'm going to hold off on buying a RE20 or SM7B until I the end of the year when I have more money (since I'm only 18, I still get money for Christmas and my birthday :D ). However, I want to get an Dynamic Omni to see how it sounds on my Fender Twin Reverb. I'm up in the air about the mics listed about. I've read people rave about the EV 635a and also read that some people use the AT804 for the majority of their electric guitar recording. I haven't read much on the RE50, however. What are ya'll's thoughts?

I recall that the RE50 is the same mic as the 635 with the addition of additional internal shock mounting. I have some of each, and their sounds are similar. Sorry, I know nothing about the AT804.

The EVs are very useful mics, but don't expect a religious experience.

What mic will cause a religious experience? :p

RCA 77.

Just kidding (although a good ribbon mic IS great for electric guitar).

Probably none. Nice thing about the 635 is the price, especially if you pick a used one up on the 'bay.

The AT804 is actually a pretty damn cool mic for clean cab mic'ing. I wasn't too impressed for heavy stuff, but yeah it's well suited for close mic clean-ish stuff.

If you really want to hear a guitar cab sing, go with an AEA R84. That's a lot of Christmas and birthday dough though.

i've had 635a's beat out a 4038, a 77DX and a BK5 on guitar amps. it sucks really...one session last year a 635 beat out like, 10 mics on a particular fender amp...i was kicking myself cuz they're so cheap...

no shit. when they work - they work really well and they are no less valuable than more expensive mics.

they work on electric guitar amps fairly consistantly in particular. like all mics when you have other options you can sometimes find something better, but these will get the job done everytime.

one caveat - they're wide cardioid - wide enough to be considered an omni...slap me if i'm wrong on the cardioid thing...

later-
Mike
