it was pretty easy to get this mic to sound decent to very good and though I haven't given it a thorough test, to me, it sounds like a slightly brighter peavey 520i (not a bad thing at all) and really liked it on my tube amp but it won't replace my beyer.

ok...the old oktava mod...

1.take a dremel type unit with the flat abrasive disc and carefully cut into-through the first inside screen

(the inside is less burly than the outside screen and it has a metal mesh between the two)

2.i did this for about the width of 1/8 the circumference (width of a flat dime)...then used a dentists pick to pick it slightly out from inside though i almost used a big needle stuck through the outside grill or tiny screwdriver run alngside the cut edge inside.

3. the main point being to get enough of the inside screen to grab ahold of it with some needle nose pliers. Then just kind of rotated the pliers in a circle to rip out the inside 2 screens.

4. kept thinking i was deforming the outer grill but damn...thats one tough exterior...the whole thing came out without any frayed edges or metal bits..very surprising...and then it fit back on with no problems or deforms..with the orig. wimpy foam screen inside.

5. will experiment with a thicker or better foam as my bud has some of that nice shotgun mic fur-foam in future.

a cheap, good sounding large diaphragm condenser until you get an re20

Ok, it sounds a lot better/manageable...i got that ringing sound too when unmodded and couldn't stand it, it's similar to the pv 520i imho but only used it on vox and tube amp...nice on the amp! waitin for the kikdrum

I wondered if that would help. The EV Cardinal is based around a $2.49 Transsound electret condensener small diaphragm capsule. I put it aside after I discovered that.

But your work on the Raven sounds promising!

damn you joly! u make me tinker

i got one of your first mods way back when....my 219 is my BABY .. THANK YOU!

the ev was something that looked so promising for so cheap...had to buy

wish i hadn't now but what can you do? MOD IT!

so, anything else you can throw in so i can make it mo betta?

you stated "$2.49 Transound electret condensener small diaphragm capsule" inside....and it confuses me...this is a larger capsule than a dynamic sm57 so i figg'd it was "large" but is a large dynamic the size of a small cond. capsule?

can I pull it out and put in a generic "better" capsule? I always liked those old radio shack lavalier battery mics with panasonic caps...maybe i could put in 4 of those???:D

oops, my reply above was confusing. The Raven is indeed a dyanamic mic. The Cardinal, which looks very similar, is a small diaphragm electret condenser. So you're good!
