Has anyone tried an EV mic for vocals? I bought an EV PL80 (Dynamic Super Cardioid) this weekend, and i've been singing my heart out. EV is about the only mic brand i've really ever used, and i got this one used for $65. The shop i got it at had about five or six of them that had been previously used in a local church choir. I kind of wish i had bought a couple more of them now.

So what do you guys think? Should i have saved up for the C1 and broken out of the EV thing? :)

I used one on stage for years. For live work, an SM-58 and PL-80's are my favorite mics. At the time they came out they had the most gain before feedback. I still use mine from time to time.

Recently, I was well on my way to becoming a prissy microphone elitist, using only mikes that cost upwards of at least $700 ea. I tried a few of the commonly recommended bargain mikes and decided that many people just don't hear the same things I hear in a mike...whether that is good or bad. :)

Then, just for fun, I tried the new EV Cobalt Co4. It was only $49. And it sounded great. i was so impressed that I went back and bought 3 more, and also bought a Co9. They sound great and are built like tanks ! To me, natural sound, without significant "presence boost" is important, so take that into consideration. The Cobalt series are slightly boosted in the upper midrange that gives a slightly enhanced "clarity" without being "tinny" or "harsh and brittle". I think they are a great bargain.

Peace,
Rick

Thanks for your responses guys. I like your phrase 'built like tanks' Axis. It looks like the SM58 is also built for extreme abuse Track Rat, just a little more expensive. Dang i could have had the Cobalt CO9 brand new listed for $69 in Musician's Friend (and you got it for $49...hmm). And they also have a Cobalt Mic package for $500. It comes with case, 4 Co9s, 2 Co4s and 6 cables, windscreens, and clips.

Oh well, next time. :(

All in all i Hate that tinny, harsh, brittle sound some mics have, and i like the more natural sound you are talking about in the EV mics. The gain before feedback is a good deal too. :)

Just to be clear: I got the Co4s for $49, but paid $69 for the Co9.
I am surprised that there is very little difference in sound or sensitivity between them.

Oh, my bad, thanks! I guess the difference is the Co4 is built or geared more for instruments? Cool that there is very little difference though, two of them for $100 bucks wouldn't be bad.

The Sennheiser e835 is also a fine dynamic vocal mike, well
suited for pop and pop/rock as it's very clear sounding.

I also own and use an EV C09, due to the moderate boost in
the "mids" it's an excellent mike for putting the voice a bit more
forward in a mix ala pop/rock, dance, hard rock, etc.

For what it's worth, I think for recording yourself or others, it's
smart to have at least one good dynamic and an excellent
condenser (like the C1) for variety.

When I saw Sennheiser I thought 'hmm...nice, but we're talking bucks'. Then I saw MF has the E835S for $99.99 and i thought 'hmm...not bad at all'. Of course, I would love to have a C1 too!! And....gosh i wish i were rich.
