ev 666 problems

ok, just got a pair of nice 666's in. testing them out... and damn if they sound amazing on my earthworks pre, but all other pres they sound like doo doo.

i mean Doo Doo. no other mic of mine sounds this different from pre to pre. i am imagining that this may be due to loading problems? i dunno.

buy anyway, i was gonna experiment tonite on fiddling with the internal wiring, they have leads going out to the pins with different ohm ratings.. a 50, a 150 and a 250. i resoldered them from 150 to 250. brightened them up a bit, but they still have these strange resonances on all my pres except the earthworks (transformer or not).

would the world explode if i wired multiple leads to the contact? like if i wired the 250 AND the 150 to the pin, would the mic turn into an eagle and bite my liver out? would it change the impedance to 250+150? or like 250/150?

If you wire the 150 and the 250, then you'll get a parrallel path between the 150 and 250.

When resistors are combined in parallel, the effective resistance of the combination is LESS than the resistance of any of the individual resistors.

So, by paralleling the 250 and 150 you'll end up decreasing the amount of resistance to relatively 93.75 ohms.

Just be careful poking around inside. They can't fix these babies any longer, and good sounding one's are getting harder to find for a decent price.

The equation to find resistance of resistors in a parallel circuit is:

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/R3 + ...

so that should tell you what the new impedance is going to be.

But remember, you are also shorting turns on an output transformer when you do that. They don't like that. While it probably won't hurt anything in something as low level as a mike output stage, in a real power stage it's a good way to start a fire.

The added load of the shorted turns will probably not sound good.
