I just got my EV 635a (omni) and I noticed that it has a response like a cardioid. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with the mic, or something I'm not understanding?

Mine picks up the room...in what manner is yours acting like a cardioid?

picks up really well in front of the grill and not much at all from any other angle. I thought it was supposed to be pretty even from all angles. The attenuation is pretty drastic, like a cardioid. Maybe i am being too hard on the little guy, and need to give it more chances.

If what you have it pointed at is loud, then you wont hear softer things from other places. It doesnt normalize all the sounds around it and capture a perfect mix. Take it and put it in the middle of the room and you will hear the room on quiet sources. Perhaps have someone talk behind it as it is pointed at you talking. Do the same with a cardioid and you should notice a difference.
