I put them on my guitar last night and those things sound bad. It made my tone sound like I was playing through a crate amp.

I took them off an put some GHS boomers (11) and those sound FAT and articulate and crunchy.

I dont get why people like the slinkys'

Everyone has taste man. I don't know what kind of guitar your playing or what style for that matter. Regular slinkys have been my string of choice for years. I play through marshall and mesa amps with a vintage 79 les paul custom and it sounds great to me.

I'll take power slinkys over ghs boomers anytime for my guitar. I just tried a set of boomers on there awhile ago and thought they sounded horrible, and I switched back right away. The kind of guitar makes a difference, and it's all about your taste in the end.

i use power slinky (11's) on my guitar too... i use a PRS singlecut w/ stock #7 pickups and they're they come out with a great sound for me. It's all about your own taste... i go for new hard rock sound... like kutless / pillar / Thousand Foot Krutch....

my pappy plays with those things... hate them like none other! slinkys on this tinny sounding strat, with 80s butt rock super distortion pickups.... its a nightmare... :(

I happen to be a boomers fan my self. they sound very warm and smooth, and besides, I've never broken one! they sound so sweet on my 81 ibanez artist with the orginal super 58 pickups.... :D

i've never noticed much of a sound difference between different brands of strings as long as you stick with the same gauge. The only thing i've noticed is difference in the durability of different brands, and ernie ball strings are at the bottom of the durability scale.

on a side note: i just found out that i'm going to have to start using a different brand of strings soon, as the dealer i get my strings from will no longer be able to get the brand i use. I've known that the manufacturer was run by a nazi, but i didn't realise how much of a dick He was until recently. I'd like to say more about this situation, but I don't know if I'm supposed to know about it and I'm not going to say something that might get my local dealer into legal trouble. Once the problems are over/dealt with, i'll be sure to let everyone know about it though.

edit: i forgot about elixers, but if you don't notice a sound difference with those strings, you probably shouldn't be playing guitar.

Heres my understanding of the string issue. Beyond guage, I dont see much difference.

Heres the question...............

How many actual string manufacturers are there? A lot of it is just branding from what I understand

elixers..... *drulls*

man those are nice strings. they are like 5 times better than anything else on the market, but they simply cost too much for me to put a new pack on every 2-3 weeks. not to meantion they seem to lose that awsome sound after only a week or so and go kinda flat :(

as long as the strings are new they've all sounded the same to me

the biggest difference i've ever heard in strings is with 5 string basses. going to steel strings made a HUGE difference in sound.

I have a mexican strat 70's reissue with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickups on bridge and neck, I play through a JCM800 and I use Ernie Ball strings 0.08, 0.11, 0.14, 0.22, 0.38, and 0.46, is a mixture of sets. So far I've tried D'addario, GHS, Fender bullets, and the Ernie Ball is the one that I like the most, they sound great and clear when new and they are hard to break. I am a lead guitar player and when using D'addario 0.08s I use to break'em all the time and that doesn't happen with the Ernie Ball. The thing with the Ernie Ball is that they don't keep that fresh sound for too long, I change them every 3 or 4 weeks.

three words

SNAKE OIL STRINGS

They will change the way you think about guitar strings and how they affect your tone. And if you can't tell the difference in feel and tone after using these strings, then you have no clue about playing guitar.

H2H

I've been using Slinkys for years, and I always loved the tones, and would never have changed, but yeah, all down to personal choice.

Some like'em Fat, some like'em thin

I used ernie ball's for years because they were cheap. (used to buy them by the carton) and changed them once a week. I was playing 4-6 nights a week at the time. I switched to D'addario, for one simple reason.
The "ernies" were real inconsistant. You know how once in a while you change strings and have one that just won't ring "true"? Even though it's tuned perfectly, and intonation is adjusted correctly, it has a weird resonance to it? ........Happened all the time with the E.B.'s. I'd have to pull a freshly installed string off it and replace it.
When I switched to D'addarios , it eliminated the problem.
