I will be purchasing the AKai DPS16 track recorder or the Akai DPs24 track recorder along with a Masterlink. We were also going to purchase a Mackie 16 channel mixer but some people of said don't bother...I would surmise the Akai recorders have built in pan and track volume level controls but I'm wondering if their good enough or should we also have a mixer??

Thanks for your input.

Dave

I would get the mixer but not the 'all in one' recorders. Get a more basic multi track like an Alesis HD24, Mackie HDR or something. That way you can upgrade and change out components easier. You would need external effects but that is one of the trade-offs. Good choice on the Masterlink.

Thanks TexRoadkill, I am thinking of getting the Mackie 16 Channel VLZ mixer, I used on before, so I'll probably buy one.

Yo 007:

Just a suggestion. Make sure you call all of the 800 numbers to check on the prices.

Of course, choose reputable dealers and know what the return policies are since you putting out some bread for this gear.

I usually call Full Compass last and usually they are lower than the best price I get. [I don't work there.]

Nice gal there who is my rep: Heather Paske. But then you may have your brother, 006 working at a vendor's too.

Have fun with your new gear.

Thanks, I have the Full Compass Catalog and WILL be price comparing, also checking E-bay.

The Akai stuff looks pretty good. I would probably get one of the DSP24s now, instead of my Roland 2480. I like the idea that at some point, I would be able to use VST plug-ins with it. It is a small thing, but it would be nice to have. With something like that (an all in one box) you do not need the outboard mixer. It is all built in. EQ, dynamics. It's all there. Will it sound as good as a setup using a good mixer and hard disk recorder? Maybe, maybe not. The individual components might not sound as good, but you are not going through a digital/analog/digital conversion every time you go from one machine to another, which make a HUGE difference in the sound you get. For myself, I would get the DSP 24, skip the mixer (you do not need it, and I can not imagine any time you would use it) and spend that money on monitors. If you already have monitors, use it for mics. Either of these will be far more useful than the mixer. In order to get to the recorder, you have to go through the internal mixer, so why not use it, right.

Thanks for the reply Light.
I guess I'm stillliving in the anolog world where you needed a mixer! I think what I'll do is buy a Akai DPS24 track recorder and see how she sounds, along with the the other external effects units.
I think I may purchase a patch bay as well to better organize all the inputs.

Stereo Vitalizer Mk2-T

Light or others:

I've been reading up on Stereo Vitalizers, looking seriously at the Stereo Vitalizer Mk2-T for use at the mastering stages.

Is anyone else out there using one of these units? Are they worth the money?

Thanks ALL

Dave

the yamaha 4416 is cheaper and has the yamaha 01v inside the unit so u have a mixer within itself and you'd have enough left to get the y56 plug in and have a monster.just somethin else for u to look into. with it like tha its also compatible to adats and other recorders you wont have to feel limited.can use for a controller for computer based recording also
