Hi there, I am looking to set up a home recording studio so I can record my band myself.
I know how to record and mix etc etc but have always been a bit lost with the equipment side of things.

Basically, my question is this...what exactly do I need to set up my home recording studio? I'm on a very tight budget so obviously I'm not looking for totally top of the range equipment and an excessive amount of microphones. At least for the time being until I can get the basics sorted out.

So here's the gist of what I am aiming to do. I am using Logic on a Mac, but the Mac I am using, doesn't have any audio inputs, it only has a USB connection.
I want to record drums as a multi track. This being 7 mics all recording at the same time ultimately being on separate channels within Logic.

I already know the mics I want so I'm alright in that area. I just need to know a complete list of everything else I will need. Such as mixing desk, connecting to the Mac, the right cables etc (and if possible some links). But obviously trying to keep the costs to a minimum...

Any help you may be able to provide will be so greatly appreciated as I've been researching and researching to the point of screaming and shaking my fist into the air haha...

If you need any more info please feel free to ask.

Thank you.

If you've been researching, you should already have some answers. If you're recording drums with multiple mics, then you'll need an audio interface channel for each mic input. Head that way rather than a mixer. USB if that's all your Mac supports. A mic cable is a mic cable is a mic cable. Enough of them and some monitors and you're away.

Saying you're on a budget doesn't tell us much. Your tight budget is the next guy's extravagant budget. How much?

And is there anything else you want to record apart from drums?

I've been researching but everything I've found gives different answers.
Yeah I want to record bass, guitars and vocals but as I'd be recording them separately it's not an issue.
What interface would you recommend? Total budget is around the £500 mark.

Well, some are just not well informed. No offense meant.

USB 2.0 is fully capable of recording 16 tracks simultaneously. USB 1.0, seems to be limited to 2 tracks.

There are many USB connected interfaces, that will do what you are asking. I myself use a Tascam US1800, but I am not sure how well that works with Logic/Mac, as I am a poor PC guy. :)

#1, you need an interface with as many preamps (XLR inputs) as you need mics recorded to separate tracks. Do not confuse this with a USB 'Mixer', as you will be sad to find out, that most only send two tracks via USB.

There is much information to be found in the stickies on this forum. Read, then come back with more direct questions. :)

Welcome to the forum Darth! :D

Thank you. I had pretty much lost all hope last night and was on the verge of giving up until you posted! Lol. Cannot thank you enough. :)
