It's been a while since I've posted on the good ole BBS. Its nice to be back... especially now that I'm 18 and have access to a Franklin Templeton account worth $13,000!!!! I posted on here a while back asking for help with deciding on a good setup and everyone was more than helpful. Anyway, as a result of what I learned from that and after shopping around, reading things, etc. I now have what I consider to be a pretty damn good proposal for equipment. Please let me know what you think about any of this equipment. Especially the PreSonus DigiMAX, if anyone has used that or any of their other equipment. I hope everyone has been doing well! The list is below...

later!
Ryan

PowerMac G4 667 w 256MB Upgrade
Digidesign Digi-001
PreSonus DigiMAX Digital Effects Processor
Event PS-8 Monitors
Audio-Technica AT4033
(2) Audio-Technica AT4041
(3) Shure SM 57
Sennheiser E604 Drum Microphone 3-Pack
(2) AKG D112
and of course mic stands, cables, etc...

Well, if your going to record using more than 2 of your mics you're gonna need either a mixer or some standalone pres. The digi-001 only has 2 mic preamps. Good luck.

Thanks

Hey, thanks for the response. The PreSonus Digimax is actually an eight channel mic preamp... I dont know why they refer to it as a digital effects processor on musiciansfriend.com. Anyway, I assume that everything else on the list seemed good to you? I see you live in Pheonix, I'll be out that way sometime around January to go to school @ The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe. Ever heard of it?

Thanks again gnarled!
Ryan

Oops, sorry about that. Guess I should have looked more closely before I opened my mouth. Anyway, I know a couple of people that have gone to the conservatory. Its supposed to be a pretty good school...at least their equipment is top notch.

Your setup looks pretty good to me otherwise. The 4033 kicks. Just one question though...how are you planning to hook up the digimax and the digi-001? I assume you're going to use the ADAT interface between the two. If so, you could probably still use some extra pres so you could record up to 16 tracks simultaneously. Otherwise, why not just get a card with ADAT i/o and skip the digi-001 if you just want to do 8 and save some $$$. Personally, I have a Gadget Labs Wave 8/24 card, and I often feel limited by the 8 simultaneous inputs, especially when tracking a whole band live.

Feel free to look me up when you get out here and check out my shabby studio.

Ben

Sorry to be off-topic...I just thought it was interesting to see the name "DrummerRyan," because my friend Ryan who lives about a mile from me plays the drums...in fact, he's started teaching me. Now I wanna buy a kit, but I am too poor. :p
I'll have to find a real job soon.

Isaiah

I'd stick with the digi 001 even though you can get around it by getting the card. Unless I'm mistaken you can't run prtools with other cards.

********Warning: this is very opinionated........*********

Have you already gotten the mac or is it still in planning stages? I'm not trying to start the mac war AT ALL, but it's something to consider. Before you buy your stuff, get on the BBS for digidesign. A bunch of users got together and created a cross platform test of performance and got the PC side and Mac side to run it.

The reason I'm bringing it up is because the pc's are really getting some amazing results, and I've seen a few posts of mac users actually thinking of switching. Considering more plugins and a HUGE savings, it's something to simply look into. (The test is based on plugins)

I mention most of this with great fear....So please mac users...I'm just offering a differen't point of view.

Just an FYI....

According to Mix magazine -- the majority of "big-boys" production facilities use Macs...

THANK YOU ALL!!

First of all, THANK YOU! I really appreciate the time you all take to respond with insight. As I'm sure you can imagine, it is very helpful to me!

Ben (Gnarled) - The card idea is something I didnt even consider to be honest with you... although, to be honest with you, I think I'll still end up sticking with the digi-001. I'd definitely like to get in touch with you when I'm over in that area... especially since moving from Carrollton, GA to Tempe, AZ will be a DRASTIC change. It's always nice to know someone who lives in the area you're visiting.

Isaiah (Prism) - Thats cool, and quite a coincidence! and speaking from experience, yes, drums are too damn expensive. My newest kit ran me $3,000 without cymbals and what not.. all that included was drums and axis pedals. Too expensive, but at the same time worth it (contradiction).

Executivos - Dont worry man, I'm not going to slam ya! I'll definitely give that some honest thought. I actually used to be one of those assholes who would try to rip people a new one for prefering PC's.. but actually I've grown to like the NT/2000 OS. I've been using NT platforms for about two years at work now with little or no trouble. I still hate 98/ME.... but anyway, thank you for the post, I honestly do appreciate your thoughts. You have good points about the plugins and all...

Bruce (Blue Bear Sound) - Thats what I've heard all along, which is a sigh of relief to see that after many years of mac being "ignored," people are finally starting to acknowledge how much they kick ass (especially now that there's G3'd and G4's). I dont really ever think that mac was totally ignored (especially not in the graphic design business), but you know what I mean.

Finally, thanks again everyone! I sometimes wish we could hold a "HomeRecording.com BBS Conference." HAHAHA, That would be cool! Maybe one day...

later,
Ryan

I wouldn't fear for expressing your opinion here, overall its a good bunch.

Over the last few years, especially with the introduction of Windows 2000, the distance between Mac and PC for artistic suitability has narrowed greatly.

While there are some (dis)advantages to both platforms, I have always leaned towards the PC for one reason - my "studio PC" has always been a dual purpose machine, serving my studio, as well as my business. I'm sure they exist, but I have never found an accounting package that I like, that runs on the MAC. So, for these reasons, I've always forced myself into PCs.

As time progressed, and I've gotten into a home-based network for my home and studio, I've further benefitted from using PCs. Why? Because when I need to farm out the networking labor (build servers, upgrade servers, connect workstations, etc), the ratio of NT people to MAC people is outstandingly lopsided towards PC environment.

Everyone has their own needs I guess :)

Bruce, I definitely agree with you that the big boys use mac, and in a major studio I would too.

For a digi001, however it's not the exact same because it's host based. The processing is done by the cpu. If you want more plugins you have to rebuild your computer.

In a protools tdm system (and most every high end system) you have a dsp card that handles the processing. Need more plugins? buy another card.
