I was wondering if there was anyone out there that would be give away/send any old-outdated-even broken equipment to a band that is trying to get a start somewhere. We are in high school (Proof via email if you would like) and with about $100 between us all we don't have a lot of money to buy any gear. We would like to get into recording but we just don't have the money. Any thing that anyone could offer we would be grateful for. PM or leave a post.

thank you.

Well, you got cojones, for sure. Of course, if you had cajons, you wouldn't be mooching for drums...

But really, this has GOT to be homerecording.com's biggest "Hail, Mary" pass, EVER. No mention of what you want, what instruments you already have or which ones you need, how many in your band, what kind of music, where you are, yada yada yadayada yada yada. It MIGHT happen that someone might gift you something, but come ON, kid, you gotta give us some reason to do so- and "We're broke but oh, so worthy" isn't likely to get much attention.

I under stand this and i figured what the hell i might as well give it a shot we have nothing to lose. Ok where to start.
We are out of chicago. We had some gear that was lost when our good old Chicago basement flooded. All the major instruments have been replaced/repaired (with drums on loan from a very nice neighbor.)
We lost a mixer, audio interface a few amps for the guitars and a bass amp.
Their our 4 members. in the band
We play mostly punk/grunge
you can see some of the stuff that we recorded about a year ago on our site.

We are looking for anything even if it is not working. Our one guy is pretty handy and has fixed gear for us before. Just a long shot i know but what ever

What a concept - broke musicians!! When I was a teen we worked/stole/panhandled/dealt drugs to get equipment money! :)

I worked my arse off for little money and saved to get everything I wanted.

Didn't matter what the job was or how little the pay and on top of it all I was raised on a farm and had hours of non-paying chores that had to be done daily which included shoveling sh!t so I wasn't to picky about what jobs came my way.

Is there no work in Chicago anymore?

I was raised on a farm too and any job seemed easier than working at home.

Is Chicago still "the hog butcher to the world?" If it is, I'll bet there's LOTS of shit to shovel!

Well....this seems the mentality of most of this younger generation... 'Give it to me, you owe it to me' .That being said, speaking on work, I have this Adult friend that's a Manager at a McDonald's..He told me that a kid had came to get an application for a job and when he returned it, he brought it through the Drive-Thru...!...(WTF)

HA! Now that is funny.

I'm just echoing what others have said in a way but...get a job. Then BUY the stuff you want...used.

+1....

this isn't and old value of generations past.

I'm 25, and sure i'll take free stuff if it's offered, but i'll never ask for it.

I got a job and bought loads of audio gear..

DO IT~you'll feel good! lol

and finally, to BBCG i leave my children's inheritance tax for my property :p

Some days, I choose a HR thread to expound upon. This appears to be today's pick.

Before we all go totally viral on this poor lad, maybe we should step back a bit and think it through a moment. There are probably very few of us who have not left some gear in what we would later realize was a bad place for gear- but it seemed like a good thing to do, at the time. I, for instance, recall a certain Vox Essex Bass amp that I put in the storage shed of the first house I lived in in New Orleans- the leaky roof, general humidity and petty crime that was and still is so prevalent there meant that when I happened to recover what was left of my amp, it was a sodden, rusty mess. Fast-forward to the dates of Hurricane Katrina, the flooding in Nashville, etc. and we can see that our young friend is, at the least, in good company- lots of musicians in those cities and others have lost lots of gear.

So, maybe we should give some thought to helping this bunch of kids out. Don't we have a "Pay It Forward" thread somewhere? This might be that sort of thing- maybe, collectively, we DO have the means to lend a hand to these kids in Chicago, and maybe they ARE already working their asses off to raise money.

So, how 'bout it, BBCG- tell us the whole story. Tell us about your band- what kind of music you play, what you have been able to accomplish so far, maybe post a vid or audio file with your music (who cares about production quality? Just get it on here... Some back-story on the members- names, influences, why you might need charity- i.e. if Daddy works for my friend Larry's (in Chicago,) law firm, or the one he left, we might not be too sympathetic, but if Mom and Dad are struggling just to pay the bills, that might make a difference. That sort of thing. Help us understand you better.

And guys, please take a moment and listen to what this kid has to say- once he actually says it. Really, who knows what might come from this- our participation could help this band (or members thereof) become the next Train, Miles Davis or Muddy Waters. Or, we could continue to snub these kids, and be responsible for one of 'em turning into the next Ted Nugent or Mel Torme! I sure wouldn't want that on my conscious...

I'm not giving him anything but i don't see any reason to bash him.
Hell, he's just following my pa's advice .... "it never hurts to try".

Truthfully, there are absolutely kids in situations where they have no resources. Who's to say someone might have some broken stuff they'll give away without asking?

I would agree with this. I have a lazy bastard child that I love to death. He expects to have everything given to him. Problem there is, I would give him everything if he would show interest in what I have to offer.

As bold as the OP's request may be; At least this kid took the initiative to join a forum and ask for help. At least he isn't out there trying to steal gear. At least he isn't just a 40 year old flea market/ebay seller trying to get some free stuff to sell........hmmmm.....Guess he needs to take the next step and give some more details.

Benefit of doubt given. Speak BBCG!!

Well BBCG, I live in Chicago Land, and I might, maybe, maybe not, be able to give you guys a hand. I seem to have more equipment that I don't need or use. But like some of the others said, we need to see and hear more. Do you guys even work or goto school or what?

I spent the first two decades of my life in Chicago (and still work with many Chicago musicians) and there are so many flea markets, junk stores, and pawn stores to find stuff at, it just doesn't all come at once. It's this terrible patchwork process, a couple dynamic mics and cables from a music store going out of business, your dad cleaning out a fire house (a house set on fire so the fire department can practice putting it out), getting a solid state install to use as a pre-amp at a state auction. These are just some of the stops that I made piecing together my gear. It becomes really daunting if you try to buy it all at once, but once you start looking for and finding gear, it acts as a magnet for other stuff to come your way. It takes some time, but it's well worth it. Good luck on your search! scott
